ChatGPT parent OpenAI on Friday announced plans to open its first office in India later this year in New Delhi, marking a major step in the company\u2019s global expansion. The move comes as India emerges as one of the fastest-growing markets for AI adoption.<\/p>\n

\u201cOpening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in the statement.<\/p>\n

CEO Sam Altman said he was \u201cexcited to visit India in September” and noted that the company was \u201cespecially focused on bringing its product to the country”.<\/p>\n

Opening a local office is part of OpenAI\u2019s support for the government\u2019s IndiaAI Mission and will help the company better serve millions of students, educators, developers, and professionals who already use its tools. The new entity in India has been registered and hiring has begun.<\/p>\n

India is ChatGPT\u2019s second-largest market after the US, and among the fastest-growing. India is a critical market for ChatGPT, where it launched its cheapest yet monthly plan at $4.60 just this week, targeting the nearly one billion internet users in the world\u2019s most populous nation.<\/p>\n

OpenAI faces legal challenges in India, with news outlets and book publishers accusing the firm of using their content without permission to help train ChatGPT. The company has denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n

Weekly active users of ChatGPT in India have surged over four times in the past year. India ranks among the top five developer markets globally on the OpenAI platform. It has the largest population of students using ChatGPT worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader \u2014 amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission,” said Altman.<\/p>\n

Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the development, saying, \u201cOpenAI\u2019s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country\u2019s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation.”<\/p>\n

The announcement follows India-specific initiatives such as ChatGPT Go (Rs 399\/month with UPI payments), OpenAI Academy (an AI literacy program with MeitY), enhanced Indic language support in GPT-5, and Study Mode, a learning feature gaining traction among Indian users.<\/p>\n

OpenAI also plans to host its first Education Summit in India this month and a Developer Day later this year. Local businesses are already deploying OpenAI\u2019s tools across sectors like agriculture, recruitment, and governance.<\/p>\n

The company said further details about the Delhi office and new roles will be announced in the coming months.<\/p>\n

The company faces strong competition in India from rivals like Google\u2019s Gemini and AI start-up Perplexity, both of which have launched offerings that make their advanced plans free for many users in the market.<\/p>\n
