India batting star Ajinkya Rahane has stepped down from the role of Mumbai captain ahead of the Ranji Trophy season, emphasizing the importance of grooming a new leader.<\/p>\n

Captaining and winning championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour. With a new domestic season ahead, I believe it\u2019s the right time to groom a new leader, and hence I\u2019ve decided not to continue in the captaincy role.<\/p>\n

I remain fully committed to giving my best as a player and will continue my journey with @MumbaiCricAssoc to help us win more trophies. Looking forward to the season.<\/p>\n

The 37-year-old, who has amassed 14,000 runs in 201 first-class matches, will continue to play as a batter for the team. The Ranji season starts on October 15, with Mumbai facing Jammu and Kashmir in their opening game.<\/p>\n

\u201cCaptaining and winning the championships with the Mumbai team has been an absolute honour,” Rahane wrote on his \u2018X\u2019 account.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the new domestic season ahead, I believe it is the right time to groom a new leader, and hence, I have decided not to continue in the captaincy role.<\/p>\n

Under his captaincy, Mumbai secured the Ranji Trophy title in the 2023\u201324 season by defeating Vidarbha in the final.<\/p>\n

He also led the team to victory in the Irani Cup 2024\u201325, overcoming the Rest of India (ROI) side.<\/p>\n

Prior to these red-ball achievements, he steered Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title in the 2022\u201323 season, establishing himself as one of the finest captains in Indian domestic cricket.<\/p>\n
