Amid the raging debate over exclusion of Shreyas Iyer from India\u2019s recently announced T20I squad for the next month\u2019s Asia Cup, a report claims that the BCCI has bigger plans in store for the middle-order batter. Iyer is being looked at as the captaincy successor to Rohit Sharma in ODIs.<\/p>\n

The Ajit Agarkar-led Indian men\u2019s team selection committee picked a 15-man squad for the 2025 Asia Cup to be held in the UAE from September 9. Suryakumar Yadav will continue to lead the team while Shubman Gill, who last played a T20I against Sri Lanka in July 2024, is back in the setup as the vice-captain. Iyer failed to make the cut with Agarkar wondering whom the 30-year-old can replace in the squad.<\/p>\n

According to Dainik Jagran<\/em>, there have been formal and informal discussions over the future of Indian cricket team in all three formats. Given the packed schedule ahead, the BCCI isn\u2019t willing to burden the responsibility to lead the team on the shoulders of one player.<\/p>\n

Gill is the current Test captain and is ahead in the race to succeed Suryakumar as the T20I skipper too. After a break of over a month since the conclusion of England tour, the Indian team will be playing non-stop cricket. To share the workload, the idea is to have two different leaders meaning Gill might not become captain of all three formats.<\/p>\n

Iyer To Become ODI Captain On One Condition<\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a chance that Iyer could become the ODI captain as early as the Australia series in October. However, it depends on Rohit Sharma\u2019s future. The publication further reports that a decision in this regard will be taken after the conclusion of Asia Cup.<\/p>\n

As part of the process, Rohit will be asked about his future with the Indian cricket team and accordingly, a decision will be made. Should the 38-year-old decide to hang up his boots from ODIs too, Iyer will likely be named as the long-term captain of the format and could end up leading India at the 2027 ODI World Cup in Africa.<\/p>\n

Rohit has already retired from Tests and T20Is.<\/p>\n

Why Not Gill?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Being the Test captain, Gill will be part of India\u2019s two-Test series against West Indies at home which will run from October 2 to 14. However, from October 18, the Indian team will begin their white-ball tour of Australia with an ODI series which will be followed by T20Is. It\u2019s not a given that the 25-year-old will be part of the one-day series. However, he\u2019s likely to play in the five-match T20I series.<\/p>\n

The Australia tour concludes on November 8 and then India will host South Africa for a two-Test series from November 14. The South African tour of India also includes ODIs and T20Is. Given the crowded calendar, it would be nearly impossible for Gill to be part of every game as captain, and perhaps as a player too.<\/p>\n
