Shoojit Sircar, one of India\u2019s most celebrated filmmakers, has carved his space in cinema with thought-provoking narratives and a visionary approach towards storytelling. Known for films like Piku, Madras Cafe<\/a>, October and Sardar Udham, the director has always been admired for his nuanced take on life and society through cinema. Now, he has shared his perspective on artificial intelligence, a subject that has been a matter of intense debate across creative industries.<\/p>\n

The director now reflected on the application of AI in filmmaking and explained why ethical responsibility should be at the core of using such technology. Maintaining a neutral yet thoughtful stance, the filmmaker admitted that technology itself is not problematic until it is used irresponsibly.<\/p>\n

Shoojit Sircar On Use Of AI in Filmmaking<\/strong><\/p>\n

In an interview with Zoom, the director shared, \u201cEthics is a crucial aspect that applies to everything we do. With technology, it is essential to ensure that we do not overstep boundaries. This is contingent on individuals. If there is a significant narrative that needs to be conveyed and can be expressed through AI, I would be open to that. It all revolves around the misuse of technology and acting irresponsibly. If technology serves your needs and simplifies your tasks, then I would embrace it.”<\/p>\n

Shoojit Sircar On Raanjhanaa\u2019s AI Re-release Controversy<\/strong><\/p>\n

The filmmaker also addressed the controversy around Ambikapathy, the Tamil version of Raanjhanaa, which was re-released with an AI-generated ending. While he admitted that he has not personally watched the re-released version, he emphasised the importance of protecting a creator\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI haven\u2019t watched Raanjhanaa but I\u2019ve heard about the changes made,” Sircar said, before stressing, \u201cThe ongoing battle has always been to safeguard every filmmaker\u2019s work in this nation, along with every form of art and talent.”<\/p>\n

The October director further highlighted that artistic freedom is not negotiable and must be preserved under all circumstances. He added, \u201cTheir creative vision must be preserved. We dedicate our lives to safeguarding our art. No one should be dismissive of it, nor should anyone undermine it. I can\u2019t comment on the alterations made to Raanjhanaa, but we strive to uphold our artistic freedom and freedom of expression. If someone possesses a vision, it is our duty to protect it. The challenge lies in that protection. We should focus on preserving it rather than dismantling it.”<\/p>\n

Shoojit Sircar\u2019s Upcoming Work<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shoojit Sircar\u2019s last project was I Want To Talk (2024), featuring Abhishek Bachchan in the lead. The film, based on the true story of cancer survivor Arjun Sen, was released in theatres on November 22, 2024, and was praised for its sensitive handling of a deeply emotional subject.<\/p>\n

The director is now gearing up for his next project, Ek Jaadugar, which promises to bring a new flavour to his filmography. Starring Vicky Kaushal in a magical new avatar, the fantasy drama has already generated curiosity among cinephiles. The official release date of the film is yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
