National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for the Vice President post, CP Radhakrishnan, on Wednesday filed his nomination in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n

PM Modi and other NDA floor leaders submitted the first set of nomination papers. Radhakrishnan filed his nomination in the presence of about 20 proposers and 20 supporters.<\/p>\n

Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, JP Nadda, Kiren Rijiju and Arjun Ram Meghwal were also present at the occasion.<\/p>\n

The nomination will be filed in four sets, each carrying the signatures of 20 proposers and 20 seconders. While the first set will have PM Modi\u2019s signature as the chief proposer, the remaining sets will include signatures from Union ministers and senior NDA leaders, reflecting a broad consensus across the alliance.<\/p>\n

The decision to nominate CP Radhakrishnan was taken unanimously during a key meeting of NDA floor leaders held at the residence of Union Minister Pralhad Joshi with all leaders pledging their full backing for Radhakrishnan\u2019s candidature.<\/p>\n

Who Is CP Radhakrishnan?<\/h4>\n

Radhakrishnan has previously served as a Member of Parliament and as Governor of Jharkhand and Telangana. Prime Minister Modi praised his \u201cdedication, humility, and intellect”, noting his long-standing grassroots work in Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n

Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, who has been the Maharashtra Governor since July 31, 2024, had earlier also served as the Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.<\/p>\n

Radhakrishnan has also served as a two-time MP from Coimbatore. Born on October 20, 1957, in Tamil Nadu\u2019s Tirrupur, The BJP stalwart became the state committee member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the BJP\u2019s precursor, in 1974. Before the Jan Sangh, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).<\/p>\n

In the year 1996, Radhakrishnan was appointed as the BJP Tamil Nadu secretary, following which he was elected as a Lok Sabha member from Coimbatore in 1998 and reelected again in 1999.<\/p>\n

During his tenure as MP, he served as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee and was also a member of the Parliamentary Committee for Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and the Consultative Committee for Finance. Radhakrishnan was also a member of the Parliamentary Special Committee investigating the Stock Exchange Scam.<\/p>\n

VP Polls Next Month<\/h4>\n

The Vice Presidential election is scheduled to take place on September 9, and with the NDA holding a clear numerical edge in Parliament, Radhakrishnan is widely seen as the frontrunner.<\/p>\n

If elected, he will succeed the outgoing Vice President and assume one of the highest constitutional positions in the country.<\/p>\n
