The former couple used to be engaged. <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n

Perrie Edwards was \u201cembarrassed” when she broke up with Zayn Malik. The 32-year-old singer dated the former One Direction hunk from 2011 to 2015, and he was her first real love, so not only was she left devastated when their engagement ended, her heartbreak felt even worse because of the scrutiny the news brought.<\/p>\n

She recalled on the We Need to Talk podcast: \u201cIt was just a lot\u2026 It was too much. It was just everywhere. It followed me like a bad smell\u2026 I felt embarrassed. I felt weird. Really sad. Going through all these emotions and going through it with everyone staring at me was like, it was mortifying.”<\/p>\n

Perrie met Zayn \u2013 who went on to have daughter Khai, four, with Gigi Hadid \u2013 when she was competing on The X Factor as part of Little Mix, and it was initially \u201crefreshing” for them to bond over shared experiences, but they battled to keep their romance out of the spotlight.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cThis was early days. It was all very new for them as well. I think meeting someone at that time in your career who\u2019s kinda at the same point is kinda refreshing. It\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, you get it.\u2019 It was pretty easy at first, [but] it got more difficult as it went on.”<\/p>\n

The pair deliberately kept their relationship out of the spotlight as much as possible. Perrie explained: \u201cI think part of us keeping everything private was because it was nice to have something private in general. Everything else was just laid out. I think we didn\u2019t want to\u2026 I felt bad for the girls because a lot was made to be about him. It was the start of our careers.”<\/p>\n

The Forget About Us singer \u201clearned a lot” from her relationship with Zayn, but it led to her taking some fears into her current relationship with fianc\u00e9 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the father of her three-year-old son, Axel.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI think it maybe [thinking a romance can\u2019t be sustained] comes from past relationships and how the other person handled it. Then you just assume, \u2018Oh, nobody\u2019s going to want this.\u2019 So [I] think maybe my previous relationship made me think, \u2018Oh, I probably can\u2019t have my cake and eat it. I probably can\u2019t be a popstar and have a relationship.\u2019 It\u2019s one or the other. Reflecting back, I\u2019m thinking, \u2018Oh, that probably wasn\u2019t good.\u2019 And I\u2019ve noticed it a lot. Like at the start of the relationship, I would handle things differently with Alex, and he\u2019d come at it with such a level head that it would throw me.”<\/p>\n
