Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday began the third day of \u2018Voter Adhikar Yatra\u2019 from Bihar\u2019s Gaya, notwithstanding the heavy criticism aimed at him for spreading \u201cfalsehoods” about elections in India.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the vote chori<\/em> controversy escalated to grander proportions, BJP president JP Nadda had a special kind of criticism reserved for Gandhi \u2013 a mix of Hindi song lyrics and poetry. He used the highly popular 2015 song, <\/span>Choo Lo<\/span><\/i>, by Indian band The Local Train, fusing it with what seem like his own words.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nadda shared a video that claimed to have busted Gandhi\u2019s allegations that some voters in Bihar were \u201cwrongfully” deleted from the draft electoral rolls in the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) in the poll-bound state. A day ago, the Congress leader posted a video <\/span>in which he and other opposition leaders were shown interacting with a group of people in Bihar\u2019s Aurangabad district.<\/span><\/p>\n

The video posted by Nadda, meanwhile, claimed that Gandhi\u2019s interaction with these \u201caggrieved” persons was \u201cscripted” and his \u201cvote chori” campaign was a \u201cPR disaster”. It said the EC gave him a \u201cseven-day ultimatum” to substantiate his vote theft allegations, but now it looks like \u201cpeople are exposing him”.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRahul Gandhi\u2019s Vote Chori is turning into a PR Disaster. First, EC gave him a 7-day ultimatum with all facts. Now, people are exposing him left & right: \u2018It was scripted PR, we said it but our names are in the voters list\u2019. Another apology from Rahul is loading,” (sic) said a post on X, accompanying the video busting Gandhi\u2019s claims.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT WAS IN RAHUL GANDHI\u2019S VIDEO?<\/h4>\n

While sharing his video, which was filmed during his Bihar tour in the Aurangabad district, Gandhi alleged that many who voted in the last four to five elections, had their votes \u201cstolen”. He was accompanied by allies Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD and Dipankar Bhattacharya of the CPI-ML Liberation.<\/p>\n

In the video shared by Gandhi, a group of people have shared their concerns on being excluded from Bihar\u2019s voter list. Most of them said they were included in the previous voter list and even cast their vote in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, but have been excluded from the revised electoral roll.<\/p>\n

One of the men present for the interaction claimed that despite possessing Aadhaar and voter ID cards, he is being asked for documents that he cannot possibly have. Another man claimed that after the revision exercise, voters who do not even reside in his ward have been added to the draft voter list.<\/p>\n

A woman, who identified herself as Ranju Devi, claimed that all six of her family members have been deleted despite being enumerated in the previous list. Asked how many times she has voted before, she claimed that she had cast her vote four to five times.<\/p>\n

According to the Election Commission (EC), 65 lakh voters have been struck off the draft voter list in Bihar after the SIR. The reasons cited for non-inclusion of previously registered voters in the draft rolls included death (22.34 lakh), \u201cpermanently shifted\/absent” (36.28 lakh) and \u201calready enrolled (at more than one places)” (7.01 lakh).<\/p>\n

The video also prompted a response from Bihar\u2019s chief electoral officer (CEO), who sought details of the group of people featured in the video. The EC has asked for the EPIC numbers and other information of the electors in the \u201cprescribed format” for \u201cnecessary investigations” and \u201cfurther action”.<\/p>\n
