In happy news for fans of Karan Johar\u2019s romantic lens, the filmmaker has promised to return to his directorial chair in 2026 and make classic, old-school Hindi cinema once again! The filmmaker said that direction is his one true calling in life, and he now wants to tell old-fashioned stories once again.<\/p>\n

Karan Johar took to Instagram and wrote, \u201cThe Sun\u2026 the Sea\u2026 The Clarity\u2026 The last year has been a year of internal revaluations, revelations and resolutions\u2026 It almost feels like the onset of the 2.0 version of my life\u2026 where you value what you truly have and feel for, and the rest you slowly dissolve into emotional oblivion\u2026 2026 is the year I will be back on set\u2026”<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cA promise I have made to myself\u2026 because that is not only my happy space and place but also my only calling in life\u2026 to tell stories with all the prerequisites of good old-fashioned Hindi cinema\u2026 It\u2019s in my DNA, so why run away from it\u2026 (or try to please a bunch of people I don\u2019t know). The above may sound like a melange of random thoughts, but it comes with so much clarity!!!! Seizing the moment, not just the day\u2026 Love you all \u2026 \u2764\ufe0f\ud83d\udc95”<\/p>\n

The filmmaker\u2019s post echoes the sentiment he expressed in a chat with Suchin Mehrotra on The Streaming Show podcast. Karan Johar argued that the Bollywood filmmakers need to go back and make films they are best at \u2013 romantic dramas. He said, \u201cWe don\u2019t have the directors to mount those kinds of films (intense action). So, if we can\u2019t, then thank God for Saiyaara. This, we can do.”<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I met Mohit Suri, he told me that all the filmmakers from the south called him, and it was so gratifying to know, because we are the ones calling them. We are always picking up the phone, telling them how incredible their films are. We do one thing well, so let\u2019s do that. Let\u2019s go back to our storytelling,” he added.<\/p>\n

Karan Johar last directed Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi among others. The film marked Karan Johar\u2019s return as a director after almost seven years. It was among the highest-grossing Bollywood films in 2023 and was declared a blockbuster hit.<\/p>\n

Recently, the film earned two prestigious accolades at the 71st National Film Awards: Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and Best Choreography, awarded for the dynamic number \u201cDhindhora Baje Re”, choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant.<\/p>\n
