India T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has reportedly cleared a fitness test at the BCCI\u2019s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, crucially in time for the board\u2019s selection meeting regarding the 2025 Asia Cup in September. Suryakumar underwent surgery for a lower abdomen hernia in Germany in June.<\/p>\n

The selection committee will convene in Mumbai on August 19 to discuss and announce the squad for the T20 multi-nation tournament. Suryakumar is expected to be present alongside chief selector Ajit Agarkar, with many pivotal calls set to be taken for India\u2019s T20I future.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has cleared his fitness and will be available to captain the Indian team during the Asia Cup,” The Indian Express quoted a BCCI source as saying. \u201cHe was at the COE till a few days ago, where he underwent a rehab programme and has now been declared fit. He will be attending the Indian team selection meeting.”<\/p>\n

The 34-year-old has recently been rocked by injuries. He went under the knife for a similar sports hernia injury last year, too. The year before that, he underwent surgery for an ankle issue.<\/p>\n

This time, he was said to have consulted a doctor in the United Kingdom after IPL 2025. India will hope that the recurrent injuries don\u2019t hamper his preparations for a crucial patch of T20I cricket.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s Asia Cup campaign begins on September 10 against the UAE. Suryakumar is the sixth-ranked T20I batter in the ICC rankings but is widely considered one of the best in Indian history, and thus crucial to the team\u2019s hopes of defending the title.<\/p>\n

Will Suryakumar pick his successor?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Although Suryakumar has a goos few years of cricket ahead of him, a lot of the talk ahead of the Asia Cup team selection has surrounded around who\u2019d be his successor. Axar Patel is the current vice-captain, and he\u2019s 31, but Shubman Gill\u2019s success with the Test team has shaken things up, if reports are to be believed.<\/p>\n

Some believe that this is the right time to appoint Gill as the T20I vice-captain, like in ODIs, to prepare him for eventually taking over from Suryakumar. However, he\u2019s a top-order player, and the current top-three of India \u2014 Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma \u2014 have been in good form and enjoy the team\u2019s backing.<\/p>\n
