Alia Bhatt\u2019s Jigra had an underwhelming run at the box office when it was released in October last year. Jigra follows the journey of Satya, played by Alia Bhatt, as she fights to free her brother, Ankur, portrayed by Vedang Raina, from a wrongful conviction and a death row sentence. While Alia and Vedang\u2019s performances were appreciated, the film itself was a box office failure, embroiled in controversy. Does this mean director Vasan Bala should stop making films? Karan Johar thinks, no.<\/p>\n

Jigra Failure Shouldn\u2019t Stop Vasan Bala From Making Movies He Likes: Karan Johar<\/h2>\n

In a recent chat with Suchin Mehrotra, Karan Johar said that although the Vasan Bala directorial venture didn\u2019t work, this shouldn\u2019t stop him from making more films in his style. Karan shared, \u201cVasan\u2019s meta-referencing, quirks and style of absolutely breaking the grammar of filmmaking, such things may not always land, right? But should he stop making films like this because of that? No! He must always make films that he believes in.”<\/p>\n

Karan Johar Has A WhatsApp Group With Alia Bhatt, Vasan Bala<\/h2>\n

He added, \u201cYes, we were disappointed, dejected and sad. But we are all very proud of that film, even today. Even now, we have a group comprising Vasan, me and Alia. Vasan has a brilliant self-deprecating sense of humour. He will make fun of himself in the most unique way possible. We still send messages on that group. Like, I will go and chat about this.<\/p>\n

A Decade Later, People Will Call Alia Bhatt Brave For Doing Jigra: Karan Johar<\/h2>\n

The filmmaker said, \u201cI do believe that a decade or two later, we will reference Jigra as something that broke ground, something that Alia was brave to do, something that Vasan was brave to contribute to and the rest of us were so brave to do. I am very proud of Jigra. There are films that I am not proud of that have failed\u2026 this film may have failed at the box office but for me it is a success story and I will maintain it.”<\/p>\n

Jigra Failure Gave Alia Bhatt \u2018A New Vigour\u2019<\/h2>\n

Alia Bhatt chose to remain silent during the film\u2019s theatrical run but finally addressed the matter on Jay Shetty\u2019s podcast. Alia Bhatt said, \u201cI\u2019m a very passionate actor, professional, producer. I\u2019m passionate about that. I have dreams with regard to my work, which I don\u2019t think will ever end. I don\u2019t think I\u2019m ever comfortable, and I really like that about my mind. I had a film released last year that didn\u2019t do really well, and that\u2019s given me a new vigour for a new dream to try and do over. It\u2019s something I feel very charged by. So that\u2019s the professional dream.”<\/p>\n

Vasan Bala Took Responsibility For Jigra Failure<\/h2>\n

Vasan Bala told Fever FM, \u201cIt is my responsibility to deliver box office because we are in the business of filmmaking also. This is why I need to analyse. Kuch toh hua hai na (Something has happened, right)? Something has happened where people have stayed away, something that they have not bought, something that they didn\u2019t feel the need to come to the theatre. If at all any other actor decides to give their time, his or her, then you know, make it worth it.”<\/p>\n

Jigra Controversies: Poor Box Office To Allegations Of Inflation, Plagiarism<\/h2>\n

Alia Bhatt\u2019s Jigra, directed by Vasan Bala, found itself under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Since its release, Jigra had been the subject of more controversy than acclaim. From its dismal box office performance to allegations of plagiarism, the film faced scrutiny from all sides. The film opened to a mere Rs 4.25 crore on its first day, marking the lowest opening for an Alia Bhatt-led film in a decade.<\/p>\n

Additionally, one of the most prominent allegations was that the film\u2019s storyline bears a striking resemblance to Divya Khosla Kumar\u2019s Savi. The plot of Savi revolves around a wife\u2019s efforts to rescue her husband from a high-security prison, drawing inspiration from the mythological tale of Savitri and Satyavan. Fans and critics alike have noticed similarities between the two films, with Jigra focusing on a sister\u2019s journey to save her brother from prison. Divya Khossla Kumar even accused Alia Bhatt of inflating the box office numbers of Jigra.<\/p>\n
