Chinnaswamy Stadium as a venue for the upcoming 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, scheduled from September 30 to November 2.

Sources informed IANS that the Karnataka government has denied permission to host matches at the Bengaluru stadium due to significant safety concerns following the June 4 stampede. Consequently, the matches allocated to Bengaluru for the Women’s ODI World Cup will now be held in Thiruvananthapuram.

“Yes, it has come to light that due to no permissions coming on time for hosting World Cup games in Bengaluru, it will now be moving to Thiruvananthapuram, which is also an ideal venue due to weather conditions and its proximity to Colombo. The ICC will be officially announcing it soon,” IANS quoted sources as saying on Tuesday.

Why World Cup Match Not Happening In Bengaluru?

Uncertainty has surrounded future matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium since the June 4 stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 victory celebrations, which resulted in 11 deaths and over 50 injuries. The investigation is ongoing, and findings by the Justice John Michael D’Cunha Commission have concluded that the stadium is inadequately equipped to safely host large-scale events.

The committee stated that the stadium’s design and structure are inherently unsuitable and unsafe for mass gatherings, warning that high-attendance events would pose unacceptable risks to public safety, urban mobility, and emergency preparedness.

Due to these concerns, the KSCA shifted Maharaja T20 Trophy games to Wadeyar Ground in Mysuru, while Alur hosted the Maharani T20 competition matches. Originally, Bengaluru was set to host the opening game of the women’s ODI World Cup between India and Sri Lanka, a semi-final, and possibly the final on November 2. Additionally, Bengaluru was scheduled to host two warm-up games ahead of the event.

The Greenfield International Stadium has not yet hosted women’s international cricket matches. However, it has previously hosted four men’s T20Is, two ODI games, Youth Tests, and ODIs, and was a venue for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup warm-ups, although these games were abandoned due to incessant rain.

Other venues for the tournament include Visakhapatnam, Indore, Guwahati, and Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital. Eight teams will compete in a round-robin format: defending champions Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka.

The 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup will be the first women’s global cricket event in the sub-continent since India hosted the 2016 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. India has previously hosted the Women’s ODI World Cup in 1978, 1997, and 2013.

(With inputs from IANS)

Cricketnext Staff

A team of reporters, writers and editors brings you news, analyses, features, live scores, results, stats and everything that’s cricket from all over the globe.
