Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has shared with employees a sweeping transformation of the company\u2019s identity \u2014 aimed at moving beyond its long-standing role as a \u201csoftware factory” to becoming what he calls an \u201cintelligence engine” aimed at making artificial intelligence accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must reimagine our mission for a new era,” Nadella wrote in a memo to employees. \u201cWhen Bill founded Microsoft, he envisioned not just a software company, but a software factory, unconstrained by any single product or category. That idea has guided us for decades. But today, it\u2019s no longer enough.”<\/p>\n

From Building Products To Enabling Creators<\/strong><\/p>\n

The shift will see Microsoft focus less on producing pre-built software and more on creating AI systems that allow users to design their own intelligent tools and applications.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just about building tools for specific roles or tasks. It\u2019s about building tools that empower everyone to create their own tools,” Nadella said. He envisions a future where \u201call 8 billion people could summon a researcher, an analyst, or a coding agent at their fingertips, not just to get information but use their expertise to get things done that benefit them.”<\/p>\n

AI At The Core Of Microsoft\u2019s Tech Stack<\/strong><\/p>\n

To realise this vision, Nadella said Microsoft will \u201creimagine every layer of the tech stack for AI \u2014 infrastructure, to the app platform, to apps and agents”. The company\u2019s competitive strength, he noted, will come from integrating these layers into \u201cend-to-end experiences and products”, rather than relying solely on individual offerings.<\/p>\n

By adopting the intelligence engine approach, Nadella said Microsoft aims to \u201ccreate local surplus in every company, community, and country”, expanding access to advanced AI tools beyond large corporations and technical specialists.<\/p>\n

Microsoft Layoffs 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n

Microsoft last week laid off 40 employees in Washington state, adding to the series of job cuts it has made this year. This latest round of layoffs was disclosed in a state filing on Monday, even as the company continues to report strong financial performance and increase its investments in artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

The company had cut about 9,000 employees, or 4% of its workforce, in the latest round of job cuts. The third round of layoffs happened after 6,000 job cuts (3% of its workforce) in May and over 300 sackings just a week earlier. In a statement, Microsoft said the cuts will affect multiple teams around the world, including its sales division and its Xbox video game business.<\/p>\n
