However, travel insurance does not cover every disruption.

Whether a claim is payable depends on the reason for cancellation, the policy’s exclusions and the loss that remains unrecovered.

Policies may cover specified unforeseen events, including serious illness, injury, death in the immediate family and certain natural disasters.

Depending on the policy, benefits may extend to eligible non-refundable bookings, trip interruption expenses and costs arising from qualifying travel delays. Voluntary cancellations, changes of plans and inadequate travel documents may not qualify.

Vinod Kumar Sah, Co-Founder and CTO of COTRAV, an Indian corporate travel management company, said travellers should distinguish between an unforeseen emergency and a change in business plans.

“A cancelled meeting, postponed event or revised schedule is generally not covered unless specifically included,” Sah said, highlighting a potential gap for people travelling for conferences, corporate meetings and events.

Hotel refuses a refund: Will travel insurance pay?

A hotel’s refusal to refund a booking does not automatically make the expense eligible for reimbursement. Insurers assess whether the reason for cancellation is covered and how much of the booking cost remains unrecovered.

If a hotel offers a partial refund, the remaining eligible loss may be considered under the policy. Where the hotel offers credit for a future stay, travellers should disclose it to the insurer, as its treatment depends on the policy and the credit’s validity and restrictions.

Sah said records of booking terms, payments and the hotel’s written refund decision are important when establishing the financial loss. Travellers should therefore retain booking confirmations, payment receipts and cancellation correspondence rather than relying solely on verbal assurances from a travel provider.

Karthik Venkataraman, CPRO of VeTravel, Vernost, an Indian B2B (business-to-business) technology company, said claims depend on the policy terms, the reason for cancellation and the supporting documents submitted by the traveller. He added that clearly communicated cancellation terms and accessible booking records can make the claims process more transparent.

What should travellers check before buying a policy?

Travellers should check which cancellation reasons are covered, the minimum delay period required to qualify for benefits, reimbursement limits and applicable exclusions. They should also verify whether non-refundable accommodation costs and additional expenses arising from a disruption are covered.

The central distinction is between a booking that cannot be refunded and a loss that qualifies for insurance. Even if a hotel retains the full booking amount, reimbursement depends on whether the circumstances meet the policy’s conditions.

Source link

A cancelled flight, a sudden change in itinerary or a hotel booking that cannot be refunded can leave travellers facing unexpected expenses.
