Highlighting the rapid resilience and expanding footprint of the country\u2019s travel economy, Union Ministry of Tourism Secretary Bhuvnesh Kumar on Friday said Indian tourism has seen “unparalleled buoyancy” and expansion, clocking a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17% over the past five years.<\/p>\n
Addressing the sector’s recovery and structural evolution, Kumar highlighted how tourism globally remains fragile to external shocks, noting that the sector is typically the “first casualty of any outbreak” and remains sharply vulnerable when fuel prices surge. Despite these global macro headwinds, however, India’s domestic and inbound travel segments have rebounded strongly.<\/p>\n
Much of this domestic momentum was reflected in the previous year’s tally, with India recording a 429 crore (4.29 billion) domestic tourism visits across the country. Kumar observed that this surging travel appetite within the country is fundamentally altering hospitality requirements on the ground, creating acute demand for high-quality accommodation outside major metros and into tier-2 and tier-3 destinations.<\/p>\n
According to Kumar, this geographical spread has been largely unlocked by an aggressive decade-long expansion in national transit connectivity. “In the past 10 years, we moved from 74 airports to 165 airports, reaching places where having commercial flights I would not have imagined,” he noted, citing how regional air connectivity has democratized access to previously remote destinations.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the economic value of inbound travel, the Tourism Secretary pointed out that international visitors play a vital role as economic multipliers. With foreign tourist spending outstripping domestic spending at a ratio of 1:40, the influx of foreign exchange serves as a powerful mobilising force across the broader economy.<\/p>\n
Kumar emphasised that India’s diverse geography and cultural heritage continue to drive high repeat travel, transforming casual visitors into long-term explorers. “The diversity offered by India in tourism is unparalleled,” he said, noting that while international travellers often arrive treating the journey as a once-in-a-lifetime itinerary, they frequently return to explore different regions across the country.<\/p><\/div>\n
