New data from Agoda and Booking.com points to a shift towards more frequent, repeat and spontaneous travel.

Agoda’s 2026 Repeat Visitor Ranking shows that New Delhi was the most revisited destination in India in the first half of the year, followed by Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kochi.

The ranking is based on Agoda bookings made between January and June 2026, compared with the same period in 2025.

The trend is not limited to domestic travel.

Tokyo emerged as Asia’s most revisited destination for the first time, overtaking Bangkok. Bali ranked third, followed by Seoul and Osaka. Da Nang, Kuala Lumpur, Fukuoka, Taipei and Johor Bahru completed the top 10.

Agoda said the data reflects travellers returning to destinations for different reasons, including food, culture, work, family events and the familiarity of places they have enjoyed before.

The findings from Booking.com ‘Just Because’ survey suggest another side to the trend: Indians are travelling without waiting for a traditional reason to take a trip.

A Booking.com-commissioned survey conducted by YouGov found that 58% of Indian travellers had taken a trip simply because they wanted to, while 57% had taken two to three leisure trips in the previous year that were not linked to a major life event or milestone.

Travel becomes part of everyday life

The survey indicates that smaller, everyday triggers are influencing travel decisions.

About 61% of respondents said they had booked a trip to celebrate a small personal win, such as achieving a fitness goal or getting through a difficult work week. Another 55% said they had booked a staycation to enjoy hotel amenities, while 57% had travelled simply to escape unfavourable local weather.

Travel was also used as an escape from everyday frustrations. According to the survey, 46% of respondents had travelled to avoid drilling, renovation work or noisy neighbours. Around 50% had booked a trip to avoid social obligations such as family dinners or weddings.

Work has not necessarily stopped the urge to travel either. Nearly 48% said they had booked a vacation while participating in an important work meeting or conference call, while 45% said they had browsed destination photographs while pretending to work.

The booking window can also be short. Around 35% of respondents said they book within a week of getting the urge to travel, while 20% said they book on the same day.

Taken together, the two sets of data point to two parallel changes in travel behaviour.

On one hand, travellers are returning to destinations they already know and enjoy. On the other hand, travellers appear to be less dependent on traditional occasions to justify a holiday.

First Published: Sept 8, 2026 5:43 PM IST

Source link

Indian travellers are making travel a part of their regular lifestyle rather than reserving it for annual holidays, major celebrations or long-planned vacations.
