The envoy sought a more liberal, open and competitive operating environment for US businesses in Bangladesh. The discussions covered higher US investment, transparency in major infrastructure projects, improvements to the business climate, expansion of bilateral trade, energy-sector co-operation and recent policy reforms.<\/p>\n
US envoy Brent T Christensen told Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir that US companies are keen to operate in Bangladesh.
\nThe talks covered investment, bilateral trade, energy co-operation, import policy changes and transparency in large infrastructure projects.
\nFor sourcing teams, the discussion points to continued focus on market access, energy supply and business-process reform.<\/p>\n
The meeting took place at the FBCCI office in the capital, as per local media reports, citing a press release from the Commerce Ministry. For manufacturers, importers and sourcing teams using Bangladesh as a supply base, the agenda underlined the link between trade facilitation, energy availability and investor confidence.<\/p>\n
On the floating LNG terminal (FSRU) project, Christensen said a transparent and competitive process for large infrastructure initiatives would help strengthen foreign investor confidence.<\/p>\n
Muktadir welcomed US investors and said proposals from US companies would receive top priority if they could present an efficient and operational FSRU within the shortest possible timeframe. He also said an effective LNG supply plan submitted quickly would improve their position.<\/p>\n
Christensen described Bangladesh\u2019s new import policy as having several positive changes, while noting that some provisions could be made more business-friendly. On energy co-operation, he also called the agreement with international commodities trading company Gunvor a positive development.<\/p>\n
Muktadir\u00a0said import policy reform was continuing, with changes being reviewed and adjusted in line with market conditions and economic realities. He pointed to the removal of an earlier requirement for foreign companies to appoint local agents when importing strategic equipment, saying direct dealings with manufacturers abroad had improved transparency and reduced the influence of intermediaries.<\/p>\n
Secretary of the Ministry of Industries Abdun Naser Khan, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Md Mustafizur Rahman and US Embassy Economic Chief Angelo Palazzello also attended the meeting. Both sides indicated that continued dialogue could further develop commercial relations between Bangladesh and the US.<\/p>\n
