That seasonal routine is undergoing a major shift.

Affluent American travellers are increasingly moving their primary getaways to September and October, driving a trend the industry calls the “fallcation.” According to a CNBC report citing data from luxury travel network Virtuoso, autumn bookings among high-net-worth US travellers have jumped 59% compared to last year, while total sales surged 69%.

September has essentially eclipsed August as a prime travel month, with sales jumping 77%. The demand continues later into the year as well: October sales are up 54%, November sales are up 71%, and November bookings are already tracking 70% higher. Speaking to CNBC, Virtuoso vice president Misty Belles noted that what used to be a quiet shoulder period has effectively turned into a peak season of its own.

The decision to shift holidays to autumn comes down to weather, crowds, and changing demographics.

First, soaring summer heat waves across Southern Europe have made July and August trips physically gruelling. At the same time, peak-season bottlenecks in hotspots like the Amalfi Coast and the French Riviera have meant packed venues, booked-out fine dining, and steep price tags for a diminished experience.

Also Read: Vietnam to Cambodia: 10 budget-friendly international destinations for Indian travellers

Demographics have also made this flexibility possible. Much of America’s private wealth sits with retired Baby Boomers and older Gen Xers whose children are grown, leaving them free from school calendars. Meanwhile, well-heeled Millennial and Gen Z professionals with remote-work setups can take extended trips in September without stepping away from their jobs.

Europe remains the primary draw for these trips. Virtuoso’s booking data shows Paris leading as the top choice for wealthy Americans, followed by the Amalfi Coast, the French Riviera, Tuscany, and New York City. Other high-demand destinations include London, Lake Como, Rome, and Maui.

The rush to dodge midsummer crowds has created a familiar problem: peak-season pricing and busy streets are now arriving in the autumn.

European hotel rates for September are matching—and in some regions surpassing—summer numbers. Average daily rates are up 179% on the French Riviera, 131% in the Greek Isles, and 78% in Italy’s Puglia. Across the wider luxury market, international hotels now average $1,653 (around ₹1.38 lakh) a night, compared to under $1,000 in 2019, with bookings for rooms priced at $1,500 or more rising 37% year-over-year.

Even so, luxury travellers aren’t expecting empty destinations. As industry experts pointed out to CNBC, affluent vacationers are willing to pay peak rates in autumn in exchange for milder weather, shorter lines, and an overall experience that midsummer travel no longer offers.

Also Read: Hanle to Neil Island: 10 places in India where you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye

Source link

For years, the global luxury travel calendar revolved around July and August, with high-net-worth vacationers wrapping up their European holidays by early September.
