While winter crowds inevitably descend on Sri Lanka between December and March, seasoned travellers regard September as the island’s most compelling interlude. Falling squarely within the shoulder season, the month offers an alluring combination for Indian travellers: reduced boutique hotel rates, affordable airfares, no visa processing fees, and regional microclimates that neatly sidestep the monsoons.<\/p>\n

Sri Lanka’s south-west coast is emerging from the final showers of the Yala monsoon, while the eastern shores and north-central plains bask in dry, golden sunshine. Along the eastern coastline, Passikudah, Nilaveli and Trincomalee offer crystal-clear, mirror-calm waters, ideal for snorkelling over vibrant coral reefs.<\/p>\n

Further down the coast, Arugam Bay attracts surf enthusiasts looking to catch the final point breaks of its dry-season calendar. Inland, across the Cultural Triangle, encompassing the ancient citadels of Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa, the plains remain warm and clear, allowing comfortable dawn climbs before the afternoon heat sets in. Higher up, the tea country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya stays lush and shrouded in mist, turning the hill-country train journey into a vibrant panorama.<\/p>\n


Non-stop flights connect Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport with Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and New Delhi on carriers including SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo and Air India.<\/p>\n

On the paperwork front, Indian passport holders enjoy an especially frictionless entry under Sri Lanka\u2019s visa fee waiver policy. Indian nationals are eligible for a free 30-day tourist Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) with double-entry privileges. All that is required on arrival is an Indian passport valid for at least six months, confirmed onward or return tickets, and proof of accommodation.<\/p>\n

However, travellers need to remain vigilant against internet traps. With high interest surrounding the free visa scheme, a host of copycat websites have emerged, charging exorbitant and fraudulent fees under the guise of processing visas.<\/p>\n

The High Commission of India in Colombo, reiterating urgent instructions from the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka, has issued a strict advisory alerting Indian citizens to these misleading portals. The Sri Lankan Department of Immigration and Emigration is the sole issuing authority, and travellers must apply strictly through official government channels: eta.gov.lk or immigration.gov.lk.Prospective travellers should steer clear of unauthorised third-party platforms that mimic official portals to extract payment. If a website demands payment for your 30-day tourist ETA, you are on the wrong page. By sticking to official links and routing your itinerary toward the sunlit eastern coast and ancient plains, September rewards you with an uncrowded, pristine Sri Lanka at a fraction of the high-season cost.<\/p>\n
