For Indian businesses, this could travel far beyond oil markets and geopolitics. As Washington moves to squeeze Iran’s economic lifelines and tensions continue around the Strait of Hormuz, attacks by Yemen’s Houthis on commercial shipping in the Red Sea have heightened the spectre of prolonged disruptions across two of the world’s critical maritime chokepoints.

As per the latest reports, on Monday, the Houthis attacked a crude oil tanker in the Red Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia. The attack followed earlier strikes on Saudi oil infrastructure and other ships in the nearby Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Houthis had declared a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia in July, cautioning shipping companies against calling at Saudi ports. Earlier, Iran was said to have indicated to its Houthi allies that the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could be shut if tensions with the US escalate further.

Iran-US tensions and Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are adding risks around the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb for Indian businesses.
Experts warn longer routes could lift freight costs, war-risk premiums and transit times while tightening vessel capacity.
Readymade garment exporters to Europe may see pressure on prices, margins, delivery commitments and supply-chain certainty.

The Strait of Hormuz is strategically vital to energy flows and regional shipping, and the Bab el-Mandeb links the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden and serves as a critical gateway for trade along the Suez–Europe corridor.

For Indian businesses, especially apparel manufacturers, this could translate to wider supply-chain uncertainty, many believe.

The latest escalation in the US-Iran confrontation has come after Washington announced what is dubbed “Operation Economic Outcast,” aimed at cutting Iran’s economic lifeline.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has reportedly warned that countries and companies continuing to do business with Tehran could face sanctions, with Washington seeking to target Iran’s revenue streams, including oil.

The Houthis’ renewed attacks and the July declaration of a naval blockade have added a fresh layer of risk to an already tense Red Sea shipping corridor.

Experts warn that forcing vessels onto longer routes will further drive up freight costs, war-risk insurance premiums, and transit times, whilst also tightening available vessel capacity. An earlier Red Sea crisis had exposed India’s vulnerability, even if an estimate has previously put the share of India’s merchandise trade with Europe using the Red Sea route at around 80 per cent.

Experts also cautioned that widening of disruption across multiple maritime chokepoints can ripple across interconnected trade lanes. For instance, a vessel shortage on one route can reduce capacity elsewhere, whilst congestion at alternative ports can compound delays.

For exporters, especially those shipping readymade garments to Europe, the impact could filter into product prices and margins, even as media reports suggest that escalating disruptions to global shipping routes amid tensions in the Middle East, along with shifting trade policies, have prompted some exporters to reassess their manufacturing strategy.

Meanwhile, some glimmer of hope seems to have emerged after Iran said it had resumed talks with Oman on managing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The two countries have held intermittent discussions for weeks over a mechanism to control navigation through the strategic waterway.

In their latest talks, Iran and Oman discussed establishing a ‘joint temporary navigational corridor’ and mine-clearance arrangements, raising hopes that a phased reopening of the vital energy route could eventually become possible.

Nevertheless, each new escalation in West Asia underscores that logistics can no longer be treated merely as a transportation function; it has evolved into a critical business-continuity concern.

For Indian exporters, the evolving Iran-US tensions and disruptions across multiple maritime chokepoints are no longer simply a question of higher freight bills or longer shipping routes; they are a threat to supply-chain certainty. As shipping lanes face mounting pressure and disruptions become increasingly unpredictable, exporters must contend with delays cascading across the entire value chain—from sourcing and production to delivery and customer commitments.

Fibre2Fashion News Desk (DR)

Source link

The Iran-US crisis is entering a new and potentially more disruptive phase.
