The Ministry of Labour has been tasked with completing the necessary procedures for the programme\u2019s approval.<\/p>\n
Jordan has extended government funding for the Better Work programme for three years and raised its allocation to $7 million from $1.55 million.
\nThe decision is expected to boost the garment industry’s competitiveness.
\nIt comes at a time when labour standards, transparency and sustainability increasingly influence sourcing and investment decisions of buyers, the Jordan Chamber of Industry said. <\/p>\n
Operating since 2008 through a partnership between the Ministry of Labour, the International Labour Organization and the International Finance Corporation, the programme seeks to improve working conditions while strengthening the competitiveness of Jordan\u2019s garment industry.<\/p>\n
The decision is expected to support the competitiveness of the domestic garment industry, a major export sector with annual overseas sales exceeding $2.4 billion and a workforce of around 96,000.<\/p>\n
The decision comes at a time when labour standards, transparency and sustainability increasingly influence sourcing and investment decisions of international buyers, Ihab Qadri, leather and garment industries sector representative at the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI).<\/p>\n
The leather and garment industries comprise more than 1,000 establishments.<\/p>\n
Qadri told a Jordanian news agency that continuing with the Better Work programme would help reinforce confidence in Jordanian manufacturing, preserve the industry\u2019s standing among international buyers, reduce risks for investors and strengthen its ability to attract new investment and customers.<\/p>\n
It could also support deeper local value chains and expansion into other segments of the sector, including furnishings, textiles, carpets, rugs and bags, he added.<\/p>\n
The Economic Modernization Vision sets targets for expanding the sector\u2019s production and export base, raising exports to around $5.5 billion, attracting JD3.1 billion in new investment and increasing employment to 149,000 jobs over the Vision\u2019s implementation period.<\/p>\n
Qadri said the next phase should focus on translating preferential market access and government support into higher investment, production, exports and domestic value added, while strengthening links with local industries and creating additional employment opportunities for Jordanians.<\/p>\n
