So, who is driving it? What are they buying, and where? And does the data support the idea that Gen Z and e-commerce are reshaping Chinese fashion or is that just a convenient narrative?

Is domestic spending outpacing exports?

Start with the topline numbers. According to China**;s National Bureau of Statistics, total retail sales of consumer goods reached **.** trillion yuan (~$*.** trillion) in ****, up *.* per cent year-on-year with online retail sales alone hitting **.** trillion yuan (~$*.** trillion), an *.* per cent increase. Online retail of physical goods accounted for **.* per cent of all retail sales in the country.

That is the backdrop. Now narrow it to fashion specifically: retail sales of garments, footwear, headwear, and knitted textiles from enterprises above the designated size exceeded *.* trillion yuan (~$*** billion) in ****, up *.* per cent year-on-year and this is happening at the same time textile, and apparel exports fell *.* per cent to $***.** billion. In other words, while the world bought less, Chinese consumers bought more. Is that a coincidence, or is it the industry**;s hedge working exactly as intended?

        <ph name="Courtsey"/>

Source link

China**;s domestic apparel market has quietly become one of the most dynamic consumption stories in the country.
