A new ride-hailing service has entered Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperative-led, driver-owned ride-hailing platform, has officially started operations in the two cities. The service promises fixed fares, no surge pricing and a zero-commission model for drivers.<\/p>\n

Here is everything you need to know.<\/strong>What is Bharat Taxi?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bharat Taxi i<\/a>s a cooperative-led cab service operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Ltd. (STCL) in collaboration with the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC). Unlike app-based ride-hailing platforms that charge commissions from drivers, Bharat Taxi follows a zero-commission model, allowing drivers to retain their earnings while also becoming co-owners of the platform.<\/p>\n

Where has the service started?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The service is now operational across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad after trial runs were completed. Bharat Taxi began trial in Mumbai on May 25, followed by Pune on June 26, before being formally launched at Navi Mumbai International Airport on July 23.<\/p>\n


How much does Bharat Taxi cost?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bharat Taxi<\/a> has announced fixed per-kilometre fares that remain unchanged throughout the day, except during designated peak hours.<\/p>\n

Auto-rickshaw rides are priced at \u20b918 per km, hatchbacks at \u20b924 per km, sedans at \u20b925 per km, and SUVs at \u20b932 per km during non-peak hours. During peak hours (from 8:30 am to 10:30 am and 5:15 pm to 7:45 pm), the fares increase to \u20b920 per km for auto-rickshaws, \u20b926.4 per km for hatchbacks, \u20b927.5 per km for sedans, and \u20b935 per km for SUVs.<\/p>\n

Is there surge pricing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No. Bharat Taxi says it does not follow surge pricing, even during rain, festivals or periods of high demand. The only variation is a 10% increase during the designated morning and evening peak hours.<\/p>\n

What about airport and intercity services?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a conversation with The Indian Express, Mohit Mitra, city head of Bharat Taxi Pune, said that the company is working with airport authorities to set up airport pickup services. \u201cDiscussions are underway with airport officials to finalise a booth and deposit arrangement, with operations expected to begin soon from the Aeromall,\u201d Mitra said.<\/p>\n

It has also launched an intercity service between Pune and Mumbai. The fares are:Hatchback: \u20b921 per km<\/p>\n

Sedan: \u20b923 per km<\/p>\n

SUV: \u20b930 per km<\/p>\n

How is Bharat Taxi different?<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the company, Bharat Taxi follows a zero-commission, cooperative ownership model, unlike many app-based cab aggregators. Around 35,000 drivers have already been onboarded, with fares finalised in consultation with drivers and aligned with Regional Transport Office (RTO) norms. The model is designed to provide predictable fares for passengers while helping drivers retain a larger share of their earnings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
