The Centre said it is yet to receive a formal proposal from the Karnataka government for Bengaluru<\/a>‘s proposed second international airport. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already completed a pre-feasibility study for three shortlisted locations.<\/p>\n In a written reply, Civil Aviation Minister Murlidhar Mohol said, “The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has completed a pre-feasibility study for three proposed locations – Kanakapura Road, Kunigal Road and a site in Bengaluru North and has submitted the report to the Karnataka government.”<\/p>\n The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has completed pre-feasibility studies for three sites for Bengaluru\u2019s second airport and submitted the report to the Government of Karnataka. So far, no such proposal has been received. The government also said no timeline has been fixed for completing the feasibility study or for granting approval.<\/p>\n Another reason the project may not be fast-tracked is that Bengaluru’s existing Kempegowda International Airport<\/a> still has enough room to expand. The airport currently has an annual passenger handling capacity of 51.5 million passengers, while the average daily passenger footfall in FY 2026-27 is about 123,800.<\/p>\n The Centre said Terminal 2 is expected to increase the airport’s annual handling capacity to 80 million passengers by 2030. Phase 2 of the expansion will further raise capacity from 25 million passengers to 45 million passengers.The Centre also said airports are usually expanded only when passenger traffic reaches a certain level. Since Kempegowda Airport<\/a> is still being expanded, the government may not see an urgent need to speed up the second airport project.<\/div>\n\n
Earlier this year, Karnataka Industries Minister MB Patil said the state government had invited firms to prepare a detailed feasibility and strategy report after the AAI completed site inspections.<\/p>\n
