China is becoming less dependent on exporting finished clothing, yet it is retaining a powerful position in the yarns and fabrics used by apparel-producing competitors.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s textile and apparel exports reached $<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span>.<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span> billion in <span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span>, only modestly above their <span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span> level of approximately $<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span>.<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span> billion. Over the same decade, total merchandise exports rose from about $<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span>.<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span> trillion to $<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span>.<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span> trillion.<\/p>\n<p>Textiles and apparel consequently fell from roughly <span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span>.<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span> per cent of China\u2019s exports in <span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span> to <span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span>.<span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span> per cent in <span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span><span class=\"startxt\">*<\/span>.
