{"id":30215,"date":"2026-07-20T10:31:24","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tezgyan.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/20\/indian-travellers-in-spain-may-soon-be-able-to-use-upi-for-payments\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T10:31:24","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:31:24","slug":"indian-travellers-in-spain-may-soon-be-able-to-use-upi-for-payments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tezgyan.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/20\/indian-travellers-in-spain-may-soon-be-able-to-use-upi-for-payments\/","title":{"rendered":"Indian travellers in Spain may soon be able to use UPI for payments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-article-id=\"19949446\">For Indian travellers heading to Europe, making payments could become easier in the future as India explores wider acceptance of its Unified Payments Interface (UPI) across international markets.<\/p>\n<p>During Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal\u2019s recent visit to Europe, India and Spain agreed to move ahead with technical discussions on enabling interoperability between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbctv18.com\/tags\/upi.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UPI and Spain\u2019s digital payments<\/a> platform Bizum.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/images.cnbctv18.com\/cnbc-assets\/html\/mutual-fund.html?v=7.9&amp;page_type=article\" title=\"embedded-content\" width=\"100%\" height=\"370px\" frameborder=\"0\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width:100%;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\nSeparately, discussions with Estonia also included cooperation in fintech and UPI integration.<br \/>While the timelines and details of the integration are yet to be finalised, wider acceptance of UPI could offer Indian travellers another digital payment option when they are abroad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What UPI integration could mean for travellers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>UPI has become a widely used payment method in India, allowing users to make instant bank-to-bank transfers through mobile applications. If similar linkages are expanded overseas, Indian travellers may be able to use UPI-enabled apps for payments at participating merchants in partner countries.<\/p>\n<p>This could simplify small-value transactions such as payments at restaurants, retail stores, local transport services and other everyday expenses.<\/p>\n<p>For travellers, having access to a familiar payment system can reduce the need to carry large amounts of cash or depend only on international cards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond Spain: India\u2019s push for global digital payments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India has been working to expand UPI\u2019s international presence through partnerships with other countries. UPI services are already available in several markets, including France, Singapore, the UAE, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Qatar.<\/p>\n<p>The expansion is part of India\u2019s broader effort to promote its digital public infrastructure globally and build easier cross-border payment connections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What Indian travellers should know<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even as UPI expands overseas, acceptance will depend on local partnerships, merchant availability and support from payment apps.
