Travel experts say Indians are using the rainy months to plan short getaways, wellness retreats and experience-led holidays, both within the country and overseas. F

rom weekend road trips to nearby destinations to international beach escapes, travellers are looking for experiences that fit into shorter breaks.

The trend is also showing up in booking data.
According to travel platform Cleartrip’s Peekaboo Trends Tracker, hotel bookings during the monsoon have risen more than 54% year-on-year, while bus bookings have surged 140%. Flight bookings have also grown, with solo travel and advance planning becoming more common than in previous years.

“We are now in an Age of Experience, where travel is driven by intent rather than itineraries,” said Pallavi Saxena, Chief Marketing and Revenue Officer, Cleartrip. “The Indian traveller is not waiting for the perfect season or the obvious destination.”

Weekend escapes gain momentum

Experts say the monsoon is becoming a travel season rather than an off-season.

Rajat Sethi, Cluster General Manager, Fairmont Jaipur and Raffles Jaipur, said the company has seen a rise in short leisure escapes, weekend retreats and staycations during the season.

“The monsoon season has evolved into a highly anticipated travel period rather than being viewed as an off-season,” Sethi said, adding that travellers are seeking destinations that combine natural beauty with immersive experiences.

Gaurav Singh, Chief Operating Officer, Chalet Hotels Limited, said younger travellers are driving demand for shorter, experience-led “micro-cations” and driveable getaways.

“We are seeing a significant structural shift,” Singh said, noting that wellness, local culture and nature are becoming important considerations for travellers. At Athiva Resort & Spa in Khandala, the monsoon contributes nearly 35% of the resort’s annual bookings from independent travellers, according to Chalet Hotels.

Marriott Aravali Resort & Spa, Delhi NCR, also said it has observed growing demand for two- to three-night breaks, particularly from travellers in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Pune who are looking for easily accessible destinations.

The focus shifts from where to stay to what to experience

Travel preferences are also evolving beyond accommodation alone.

Sethi said travellers are opting for holidays that combine accommodation with dining, wellness and curated experiences.

Gurnoor Bindra, General Manager, Raffles Udaipur, said today’s travellers are looking for “a genuine sense of place” rather than simply choosing a destination. According to her, personalised experiences, wellness and opportunities to reconnect with nature are becoming key considerations during the monsoon.

Marriott Aravali Resort & Spa similarly said travellers are placing greater emphasis on the overall value of a holiday and are increasingly seeking authentic local experiences alongside their stay.

Beyond Bali and Phuket

The changing travel preferences are also reflected in outbound travel searches.

According to Agoda, accommodation searches by Indian travellers between May 1 and June 30 for stays during July and August indicate continued interest in established destinations such as Bali and Phuket, while newer beach destinations are also attracting attention.

The travel platform said destinations such as Lombok in Indonesia, Phu Quoc and Da Nang in Vietnam, Ko Tao in Thailand, Trincomalee in Sri Lanka, and Mediterranean destinations including Santorini, Nice and Ibiza are seeing growing search interest from Indian travellers.

The findings are based on accommodation searches and do not necessarily reflect confirmed bookings.

“Indian travellers are broadening their horizons beyond the traditional beach favourites,” said Gaurav Malik, Country Director, Indian Subcontinent & Indian Ocean Islands, Agoda.

He said travellers are looking for a wider mix of beach destinations, from popular seaside hotspots to quieter coastal towns.

The monsoon is also finding favour for destination weddings

The shift in travel patterns is extending beyond leisure holidays. Experts say some couples are considering destination weddings during the monsoon, citing better venue availability and, in some cases, lower costs compared with the peak wedding season.

Animesh Kumar, Commercial Head, ibis & ibis Styles India, said affordability and greater flexibility are encouraging more couples to explore monsoon weddings.

“Choosing the monsoon season gives couples far more flexibility, whether it’s securing their preferred dates or planning the celebration at their own pace,” Kumar said, adding that destinations such as Goa are seeing interest for intimate celebrations.

Pardeep Siwach, General Manager, Mayfair Spring Valley Resort, said rising wedding costs in traditional destinations are also prompting some couples to consider newer locations.

“We are definitely seeing more couples consider the monsoon season for destination weddings,” Siwach said, adding that couples are also looking for venues that can seamlessly shift celebrations indoors in case of adverse weather.

Source link

The monsoon is no longer just a season to stay indoors.
