Industry experts say student travel insurance plays a central role in managing those uncertainties, ranging from medical emergencies to financial disruptions.

According to experts, student travel insurance is structured to provide comprehensive protection tailored to the needs of individuals pursuing education abroad.

These policies typically extend well beyond standard travel cover, reflecting the longer duration and varied risks linked to student life overseas.
“Ensuring that your policy aligns with your university’s requirements is the first and most critical step,” said Vivek Chaturvedi, Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Direct Sales at Digit General Insurance.

Matching policy with university requirements

Universities across countries prescribe different insurance norms, making it essential for students to select policies accordingly. Some institutions require basic health and accident cover, while others mandate broader protection, including mental health support, maternity benefits, or coverage for sports-related injuries.

Chaturvedi noted that aligning insurance with university guidelines is a critical first step in the process.

Coverage size depends on destination and duration

Insurance plans typically offer coverage ranging from $50,000 to $1 million. The appropriate sum insured depends on the duration of the course and the cost of healthcare in the destination country.

“For shorter courses, a lower sum insured may suffice, but for multi-year programmes—especially in countries like the US and Canada—higher coverage is advisable due to elevated medical costs,” Chaturvedi said.

Scope extends beyond medical emergencies

Student travel insurance has evolved to include financial and academic safeguards alongside healthcare benefits.

Chaturvedi explained that policies can cover tuition fees if a sponsor is unable to continue funding due to death, illness, or disability. They may also reimburse non-refundable expenses if a student is forced to interrupt studies due to medical or family emergencies.

In addition, coverage may extend to injuries during campus sports, limited protection during visits to the home country, and certain long-term health benefits such as preventive screenings or maternity-related care, depending on the plan.

Exclusions remain a key consideration

Despite broad coverage, policies exclude specific risks.

Chaturvedi said claims related to illegal acts, substance abuse, self-inflicted injuries, or conflict situations are generally not covered. Pre-existing conditions, elective procedures, and high-risk adventure sports may also be excluded unless explicitly added to the policy.

He emphasised the need for students to read policy documents carefully to understand inclusions and exclusions.

Claims process varies by type

The claims process depends on the nature of the expense. In cashless cases, insurers settle bills directly with healthcare providers. For reimbursement claims, students must submit documents, after which the insurer evaluates and processes payment.

Chaturvedi highlighted that timely communication and proper documentation are essential for smooth claim settlement.

Evaluating where to buy insurance

Students often choose between university-provided insurance and independent policies.

According to Chaturvedi, purchasing insurance from the home country can offer advantages such as broader coverage, flexible durations, and cost efficiency. He added that such policies often provide 24/7 assistance and access to global healthcare networks. Even where local insurance is mandatory, he suggested that an additional policy may help bridge coverage gaps.

Managing risks beyond admission

With overseas education involving significant financial commitment, insurance is viewed as a necessary safeguard.

“A student visa is your ticket, but student travel insurance is your ultimate shield,” Chaturvedi said, underlining its role in protecting not just health, but also financial stability and academic continuity.

Source link

A student visa may mark the final stage of admission formalities, but it does not eliminate the risks associated with living overseas for an extended period.
