Elon Musk-owned X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday announced a major revision to its Creator Revenue Sharing rules aimed at protecting authenticity and preventing misleading content.<\/p>\n

The update comes amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, where thousands of posts and videos on X\u2014some garnering millions of views\u2014have promoted misleading claims following the US and Israeli military strikes on Iran and Tehran\u2019s retaliatory attacks in the Gulf states.<\/p>\n

Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, said the changes are intended to \u201cmaintain authenticity of content on Timeline and prevent manipulation of the program.”<\/p>\n

She added that during times of war, it is critical for users to have access to reliable information. \u201cDuring times of war, it is critical that people have access to authentic information on the ground. With today\u2019s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people,” Bier wrote.<\/p>\n

Under the new policy, any user posting AI-generated videos of armed conflicts without clearly disclosing that they were created using AI will be suspended from revenue sharing for 90 days.<\/p>\n

Repeat violations will result in permanent removal from the programme. The platform will flag violations through Community Notes or metadata and other signals from generative AI tools.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will continue to refine our policies and product to ensure X can be trusted during these critical moments,” Bier added.<\/p>\n

The revision follows widespread concerns over misinformation on the platform. A report by Wired<\/em> on Sunday highlighted how X has become a hub for disinformation amid the ongoing tensions. Some video footage shared on X is months or years old, while other posts have misattributed locations or even passed off video game footage as real conflict scenes. Several images appear to be AI-generated or altered.<\/p>\n
