(PTI)<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"0\" class=\"story_para_0\">The Enforcement Directorate versus West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee clash over the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/india\/west-bengal-enforcement-directorate-ed-ipac-raids-court-hearing-mamata-banerjee-tmc-protest-9818890.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> raids on the TMC\u2019s strategist<\/a> I-PAC intensified further on Friday, with Banerjee holding a protest rally in Kolkata and questioning the detention of TMC leaders and ED action.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1\" class=\"story_para_1\">The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) meanwhile accused her of corruption.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2\" class=\"story_para_2\">I-PAC has been providing political consultancy to the TMC and the state government since 2021. The ED on Thursday searched the Salt Lake office of I-PAC and its founder and one of the directors Pratik Jain as part of an alleged coal scam-linked money laundering case. Some other locations in Bengal and Delhi were also raided.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3\" class=\"story_para_3\">The ED alleged that Banerjee entered Jain\u2019s residence on Loudon Road in Kolkata during the raids and \u201ctook away key evidence&#8221; and followed the same action at the I-PAC office. The ED claimed in the petition that around Rs 20 crore of hawala funds, generated from alleged coal pilferage in West Bengal, found its way to I-PAC and were even allegedly used in the Goa elections.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><iframe title=\"Mamata Banerjee Files Complaint Against For Data Theft After ED Raids At I-PAC Office | News18\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lWSb72llxgM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>MAMATA REMAINS DEFIANT<\/h2>\n<p id=\"6\" class=\"story_para_6\">Banerjee on Friday walked from Kolkata\u2019s Jadavpur to Hazra crossing to protest against the raids. She accused the ED of acting as a political tool of the BJP to \u201csteal&#8221; her party\u2019s internal strategy, asserting that she did nothing wrong in reaching the premises linked to I-PAC during the central agency\u2019s raids a day ago.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7\" class=\"story_para_7\">Addressing a rally here after a massive 10-km-long protest march, Banerjee said she had intervened at the raid site purely in her capacity as the chairperson of the Trinamool Congress and not as the CM. \u201cWhat I did yesterday, I did as the TMC chairperson. I have done nothing illegal,&#8221; she said, referring to her unexpected arrival at the venue of ED\u2019s searches at I-PAC offices and the residence of its India head Pratik Jain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8\" class=\"story_para_8\">\u201cI have done no wrong . Why did you come to do chori? You were stealing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/india\/ed-asks-calcutta-hc-for-cbi-probe-against-mamata-bengal-cops-in-i-pac-raid-row-exclusive-details-9820101.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">my data<\/a> from my office. I-PAC is an authorised office\u2026 I called Pratik Jain, he did not take call. Then I felt that they must be taking my party documents. I have all those pen drives, if necessary, I will open all those,&#8221; Banerjee said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9\" class=\"story_para_9\">Banerjee alleged that the agency entered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/india\/ed-calcutta-high-court-hearing-west-bengal-mamata-banerjee-seized-documents-tmc-moves-court-9819203.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the premises<\/a> early in the morning and that by the time she reached, \u201ca lot could have already been taken away&#8221;. \u201cYou entered at 6 am; I went at 11.45 am. By then, many things might have been stolen,&#8221; Banerjee said, accusing the ED of attempting to access her party\u2019s strategic data ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.<\/p>\n<p id=\"10\" class=\"story_para_10\">Escalating her confrontation with the Centre, Banerjee claimed that \u201call agencies have been captured&#8221; and accused the BJP of forcibly occupying power in several states. \u201cYou captured Maharashtra, Haryana and Bihar by force. Do you think you can capture Bengal too?&#8221; she asked, adding that any political attack only strengthens her resolve. \u201cIf someone tries to hit me politically, I get politically rejuvenated and reborn,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"11\" class=\"story_para_11\">The chief minister also trained her guns on the Election Commission, alleging that the BJP had \u201cstolen&#8221; the mandate in Maharashtra with the poll panel\u2019s help and was now attempting to replicate it in Bengal through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) by deleting genuine voters\u2019 names.<\/p>\n<p id=\"12\" class=\"story_para_12\">She announced that her party\u2019s \u201cnext destination&#8221; would be the Election Commission in New Delhi to oppose what she called harassment of voters during SIR.<\/p>\n<p id=\"13\" class=\"story_para_13\">Earlier in the day, several TMC MPs were detained in the national capital on Friday for protesting outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah\u2019s office against the ED raid.<\/p>\n<p id=\"14\" class=\"story_para_14\">In a post on X, CM Banerjee wrote, \u201cI strongly condemn the shameful and unacceptable treatment meted out to our Members of Parliament. Dragging elected representatives on the streets for exercising their democratic right to protest outside the Home Minister\u2019s office is not law enforcement \u2013 it is arrogance in uniform. This is a democracy, not the BJP\u2019s private property. Democracy does not function on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/india\/i-pac-raid-case-calcutta-hc-defers-hearing-to-jan-14-after-chaos-in-court-ed-seeks-another-bench-9819866.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convenience <\/a>or comfort of those in power. When BJP leaders protest, they expect red carpets and special privileges. When opposition MPs raise their voices, they are dragged, detained, and humiliated. This double standard exposes the BJP\u2019s idea of democracy \u2013 obedience, not dissent.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"15\" class=\"story_para_15\">TMC MP Mahuta Moitra said,&#8221;This morning, eight of us MPs came, and we were protesting outside the Home Ministry. As the high court will not be functioning over the weekend, the case will now be taken up only on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><iframe title=\"Showdown Over IPAC Raids In Kolkata, 8 TMC MPs Stage Protest Outside Amit Shah&#039;s Office | News18\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8RTFUyFznWo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>THE POLITICAL WAR OF WORDS<\/h2>\n<p id=\"23\" class=\"story_para_23\">The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday condemned Banerjee\u2019s conduct during the ED raids at a private consultancy firm, alleging her actions showed she was trying to \u201crescue something sensitive&#8221; implicating her and her party in the money laundering case linked to the alleged coal smuggling.<\/p>\n<p id=\"24\" class=\"story_para_24\">Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said she should be made an accused for intimidating Enforcement Directorate officials investigating the case and \u201csnatching away&#8221; documents from them during the raids. \u201cThere are a lot of suspicious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/explainers\/tracing-bengals-repeated-clashes-with-central-agencies-and-how-i-pac-raid-fits-the-pattern-ws-l-9820017.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circumstances <\/a>surrounding the barbaric action of Mamata Benerjee,&#8221; the former Union minister said, adding, \u201cShe knows the norms of governance while being a sitting chief minister for 14 years. She has also served as a Union minister in the past\u2026This means she was trying to rescue something sensitive implicating her and her party\u2026What else could be inferred? What was her fear?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"25\" class=\"story_para_25\">West Bengal Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari on Friday strongly criticised Banerjee\u2019s reaction to the ED raid. \u201cIt is a completely criminal offence. The CM\u2019s action is a direct attack on the Constitution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"26\" class=\"story_para_26\">West Bengal BJP President and MP Samik Bhattacharya slammed Banerjee. \u201cCan any Chief Minister who has taken the oath of the Constitution do such a thing? Has anyone ever seen such a sight in India? The Chief Minister of a state, where a raid is going on, and she comes to steal files. They are snatching files from government officials,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"27\" class=\"story_para_27\">West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose flagged legal and constitutional repercussions. \u201cLegal views were brought to my notice. First, preventing a public servant from the due discharge of his public functions is an offence under the BNS, punishable with imprisonment, a fine, or both. Second, intimidating or threatening a public servant from performing their duties is a graver offence, punishable with 2 years\u2019 imprisonment and a fine, or both. The third issue is Constitutional and serious,&#8221; CV Ananda Bose said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"28\" class=\"story_para_28\">\u201cA constitutional functionary is expected to facilitate implementation of the Constitution. The CM is a Constitutional authority. By doing this act, as they claim, she has violated the Constitutional rights to continue as the CM. I am keeping my ears and eyes open,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p id=\"29\" class=\"story_para_29\">TMC\u2019s Mahua Moitra alleged that the Enforcement Directorate was \u201ccommitting robbery&#8221; at the I-PAC office, where all of the TMC\u2019s data related to elections was present, and justified Banerjee\u2019s actions to protect that data. Moitra questioned the timing of the ED\u2019s raid at the I-PAC office in connection with a \u201cseven-year-old&#8221; alleged coal scam, and said that they were aware that TMC election information is available at that office. \u201cED is not carrying out the investigation, but is illegally stealing. The ED is not taking any action because if there was a seven-year-old coal scam, it suddenly woke up, a month before the Bengal elections, and they remembered the idea of taking action, and where did they go to take action? I-PAC is not a hidden organisation. Everyone in India knows that I-PAC is an election strategist, an election consultant,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"30\" class=\"story_para_30\">\u201cThey\u2019ve been working with the Trinamool Congress not just from today, but for the last seven or eight years, and all our services, all our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news18.com\/india\/ed-calcutta-high-court-hearing-west-bengal-mamata-banerjee-seized-documents-tmc-moves-court-9819203.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">candidate <\/a>lists, all our election information is with I-PAC because that\u2019s what they do. They raided their office. We would say it wasn\u2019t a raid; the ED committed a robbery, and they were taking all our information, and it\u2019s our duty, it\u2019s our party\u2019s duty to protect that information, and that\u2019s where Mamata Banerjee, the lioness, went.
