The court has posted the matter for hearing on December 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"1\" class=\"story_para_1\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The interim protection applies specifically to the first case registered against him, in which he has been accused of rape and forcing the complainant to undergo an abortion without her consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"2\" class=\"story_para_2\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Justice K Babu, issuing the interim order, stated: \u201cThe petitioner shall not be arrested during the pendency.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"3\" class=\"story_para_3\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The order comes two days after a Thiruvananthapuram sessions court rejected Mamkootathil\u2019s pre-arrest bail plea. Following that setback, the Congress expelled him from its primary membership amid mounting criticism and political pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"707\" data-end=\"761\"><strong data-start=\"707\" data-end=\"761\">Moves Sessions Court Within an Hour in Second Case<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"983\">Barely an hour after securing the High Court\u2019s interim protection, Mamkootathil on Saturday approached the Thiruvananthapuram sessions court seeking anticipatory bail in the second rape case registered against him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"985\" data-end=\"1264\">His lawyer, advocate Ajithkumar (Sasthamangalam), said an application was also filed urging the court to restrain police from arresting him in light of the High Court\u2019s direction.<br data-start=\"1168\" data-end=\"1171\"\/>\u201cWe are trying to have the matter taken up by the sessions court immediately today,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1266\" data-end=\"1403\">The second rape case was registered on Wednesday based on a complaint by a Bengaluru-based woman, adding to the MLA\u2019s legal troubles.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1405\" data-end=\"1523\">The Fast Track Court in Thiruvananthapuram is now examining his plea seeking no-arrest protection in this second case.<\/p>\n<h4>Two Rape Cases in One Week<\/h4>\n<p id=\"8\" class=\"story_para_8\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Mamkootathil, the MLA from Palakkad, has been absconding for over 10 days after the first complaint was filed. On Tuesday, he was booked in a second rape case, linked to an incident allegedly from 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"9\" class=\"story_para_9\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">In the first case registered at Nemom, Thiruvananthapuram, the former Youth Congress state president faces charges of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"listOncontentArticleUL\">\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">rape,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">compelling the complainant to undergo an abortion without consent,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">criminal intimidation, and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">recording her nude images using an electronic device.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"11\" class=\"story_para_11\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">He has claimed that the relationship was consensual.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Congress Acts After Criticism<\/h4>\n<p id=\"12\" class=\"story_para_12\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The Congress, under fire for not acting swiftly despite serious allegations, removed Mamkootathil from the party after police registered two rape cases in a single week. With local body elections just a week away and Assembly polls five months later, party leaders feared the scandal would damage the UDF\u2019s prospects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"13\" class=\"story_para_13\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The episode has also triggered internal turbulence. Mamkootathil was considered a rising face in the party and was believed to have the backing of Opposition Leader V D Satheesan and MP Shafi Parambil support who helped him secure the Palakkad ticket in last year\u2019s byelection despite local resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"14\" class=\"story_para_14\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Adding to the controversy, Samskara Sahithi leader MA Shahanas alleged this week that Mamkootathil had sent her inappropriate messages after she returned from the farmers\u2019 agitation in Delhi. She said she had previously warned Parambil about his behaviour, but he was ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>A Rapid Rise Followed by Scandal<\/h4>\n<p id=\"15\" class=\"story_para_15\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">A native of Pathanamthitta, Mamkootathil won the Palakkad Assembly seat in November 2024 after Parambil vacated it upon winning the Vadakara Lok Sabha seat.
