Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday tore into the Opposition for making a mockery of India\u2019s image on the global stage, saying he was \u201cdeeply hurt and ashamed” by their behaviour.<\/p>\n

Sharing a video on Instagram, Rijiju showed opposition MPs chanting slogans inside the Rajya Sabha while a visiting foreign delegation was present and being welcomed to the Upper House.<\/p>\n

The video shows RS Chairman CP Radhakrishnan struggling to introduce Georgia\u2019s parliamentary delegation as the Opposition keeps up with the sloganeering despite repeated requests. \u201cPlease sit down\u2026 Let me complete the welcome,” Radhakrishnan can be seen requesting in the video but to no avail.<\/p>\n

Expressing deep disappointment over the issue, Rijiju said: \u201cPlease see this yourself\u2026 As the Parliamentary Affairs Minister of India, I am deeply hurt & ashamed by the behavior of Opposition MPs. We may have differences but when it comes to India\u2019s image we should put aside all differences.”<\/p>\n

The minister had also accused the Opposition of \u201cdigging out issues” to disrupt the proceedings of Parliament over the issue of Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls. Talking to the media outside the House on Tuesday, Rijiju said a list of businesses has been prepared and the government will have a debate on the issues raised by the Opposition.<\/p>\n

The Parliament logjam, which began on Day 1 of the Winter Session, seemed to end on Tuesday as the government agreed to the Opposition\u2019s demand for a debate on SIR. As the deadlock was broken and Congress claimed a moral victory, Rijiju blamed the Opposition\u2019s \u201cinsistence” for the logjam, saying the government was open to all debates and discussions.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo to four parties are disrupting the House\u2026 In a democracy, people win and lose. They should not vent their anger like this\u2026 By doing this, you are losing the trust of the people,” the minister said in the House.<\/p>\n

Asking the protesting members to maintain the decorum of the House, he said: \u201cDisruption of the proceedings by members of a few parties is not right, and also anger of losing elections should not be shown in the House.”<\/p>\n
