Shashi Tharoor\u2019s recent praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi has triggered discontent within the Congress, with several leaders questioning his remarks and demanding clarity.<\/p>\n

Senior leader Sandeep Dikshit openly criticised Tharoor, saying his comments were inconsistent with the party\u2019s position and raising doubts about his political allegiance. Dikshit asked, \u201cWhy are you in Congress?” and went on to describe Tharoor as a \u201chypocrite” for applauding policies that the Congress fundamentally opposes.<\/p>\n

\u201cShashi Tharoor\u2019s problem is that I don\u2019t think he knows a lot about the country\u2026 If, according to you, someone is doing good for the country by going against the Congress\u2019s policies, then you should follow those policies\u2026 Why are you in Congress? Is it only because you are an MP?” Dikshit said.<\/p>\n

Shrinate said, \u201cHe should tell us what his problem is with fair journalism\u2026 So, I didn\u2019t see any reason to appreciate him.” She added that she did not understand \u201chow he (Shashi Tharoor) found one,” and characterised Modi\u2019s address as a \u201cpetty speech” that criticised the Congress repeatedly.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, Shashi Tharoor shared his reflections on a lecture delivered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, posting a brief analysis on X. While offering criticism of aspects of the address, he also praised parts of it, describing the speech as one that \u201cserved as both an economic outlook and a cultural call to action, urging the nation to be restless for progress.”<\/p>\n

Tharoor noted that the Prime Minister portrayed India not merely as an \u201cemerging market” but as an \u201cemerging model” that has demonstrated economic resilience. He added that \u201cPM Modi said he\u2019d been accused of being in \u2018election mode\u2019 all the time, but he was really in \u2018emotional mode\u2019 to redress the problems of the people.”<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the cultural segment of the address, Tharoor said the Prime Minister devoted \u201ca significant part of the speech” to challenging what he called Macaulay\u2019s 200-year legacy of \u201cslave mentality.”<\/p>\n

According to him, Modi appealed for a decade-long national mission to revive pride in India\u2019s heritage, languages and knowledge systems. Tharoor concluded by saying, \u201cI wish he had also acknowledged how Ramnath Goenka had used English to raise a voice for Indian nationalism!”<\/p>\n
