A political row erupted over the Trinamool Congress Mahua Moitra\u2019s post about the arrest of a poll official in Bangladesh, which she captioned as \u201cthings to come”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moitra\u2019s post drew immediate condemnation from the BJP, which interpreted it as a veiled threat against the Election Commission of India (ECI).<\/span><\/p>\n

Moitra shared the post on her social media, featuring an old photograph of a former Bangladesh election commissioner being detained by security personnel. Her post was slammed by the BJP for specifically hinting at a potential \u201cDhaka-style” arrest of the chief election commissioner (CEC).<\/span><\/p>\n

This comes from the opposition\u2019s sustained political attack against the ongoing pan-India special intensive revision of electoral rolls as well as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi\u2019s \u201cvote theft” allegations. It has also alleged that the Election Commission (EC) is actively \u201ccolluding with the ruling BJP to rig upcoming elections”.<\/span><\/p>\n

The image featured the Bangladesh poll official\u2019s arrest in an election-manipulation case following anti-government protests and the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Senior TMC leaders defended Moitra, arguing that her post successfully highlighted the perceived \u201cerosion of institutional neutrality” under the BJP-led government, as well as the \u201cgrowing public concern over electoral transparency”.<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT DID THE BJP SAY?<\/h4>\n

The BJP has claimed that Mahua Moitra issued an \u201copen threat to a constitutional authority”.<\/span><\/p>\n

The saffron party accused Moitra of attempting to \u201cimport Bangladesh-style chaos into Indian politics” and demanded immediate action. It demanded that the EC take cognisance of the post, which they termed \u201cprovocative and demeaning”. It characterised the post as an \u201cincitement to undermine public trust in the democratic process” and accused the TMC of \u201cfear-mongering” ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.<\/span><\/p>\n

Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, however, highlighted the irony that a person who had lost her MP parliamentary membership after being accused of corruption is now \u201cpointing fingers at others”. Moitra had been expelled from the Lok Sabha in December 2023 in the \u2018cash-for-query\u2019 case, though she subsequently won her Krishnanagar seat back the following year during the Lok Sabha elections.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the controversy and demands for intervention from the BJP, the EC did not immediately react to the statements.<\/span><\/p>\n
