A day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) faced a massive drubbing in the Bihar assembly polls, party president Lalu Prasad\u2019s daughter Rohini Acharya<\/a> on Saturday announced that she was \u201cquitting politics” and severed ties with the family.<\/p>\n

Acharya, a doctor who chose to become a homemaker and settled with her Singapore-based husband, made the announcement in a cryptic post on her X handle. \u201cI am quitting politics and I am disowning my family\u2026This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do\u2026and I am taking all the blame,” she wrote in her post.<\/p>\n

Sanjay Yadav is the Rajya Sabha MP from RJD and one of the most trusted aides of Tejashwi Yadav, the son and heir apparent of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad. Rameez is said to be Tejashwi\u2019s old friend who hails from a political family in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n

The RJD\u2019s seat tally slipped to 24 from 75 in the Bihar assembly polls. Acharya had unsuccessfully contested last year\u2019s Lok Sabha polls from Saran. It was speculated that she was \u201cunhappy” over the expulsion of Tej Pratap Yadav, elder son of Prasad, from the party. However, during the assembly elections, she was seen campaigning for Tejashwi.<\/p>\n

Why not Yadav? Why the name Rohini and surname Acharya?<\/h2>\n

According to media reports, Rohini was born in 1979 in the Hindu calendar\u2019s \u2018Rohini Nakshatra\u2019 under the care of a Patna-based gynaecologist, Dr Kamala Acharya. The doctor had refused to take any fees from Lalu Prasad. As Lalu insisted, Dr Acharya asked him if he can give her surname to his daughter. Hence came the name Rohini Acharya.<\/p>\n

Rohini is settled in Singapore<\/h2>\n

After her marriage to Samresh Singh, a software engineer from Icchanbigha near Patna, in 2002, Acharya settled down in the US with her husband before shifting to Singapore, where they currently live with their two children.<\/p>\n

There was a controversy over her wedding celebrations after it was alleged that their relatives forcibly took out brand new cars from Patna to the city airport to receive Samresh Singh, and his father and ex-income tax commissioner Rao Ranvijay Singh.<\/p>\n

According to her election affidavit, she has assets worth Rs 36.6 crore.<\/p>\n

Rohini donated her kidney to her father<\/h2>\n

Rohini donated one of her kidneys to her father in December 2022 at a Singapore hospital, as he suffered from chronic renal failure amid multiple health issues.<\/p>\n

She said that her parents are like gods to her. \u201cI\u2019m destiny\u2019s child and so proud to give my kidney to papa,” Acharya had said on social media before the procedure.<\/p>\n

After the transplant, she asked well-wishers to \u201ctake care of Papa,” warning people to wear masks when meeting him because doctors advised limiting his exposure to infections. She described the donated kidney as \u201cjust a piece of flesh,” underlining that her motive wasn\u2019t political gain. Once the transplant was successful, she said: \u201cAfter making my father healthy, I am sending him among all of you. Now you will all take care of my father.”<\/p>\n

As Bihar BJP\u2019s Samrat Choudhary attacked Lalu, alleging that he \u201csold Saran ticket to Rohini in lieu of her kidney donation”, Rohini rose to defend herself and the RJD. She highlighted her \u201cselfless love” for her father, criticising people with \u201cpetty mentality” without mentioning Samrat\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

She said on X: \u201cGiving my one kidney to my father is my duty and my love for him. Rohini is ready to sacrifice her life for her family and for land of her birth Bihar.”<\/p>\n

Lalu often mentions his daughter\u2019s \u201cgreat gesture” at various public platforms. Her brother Tejashwi Yadav had called her \u201csuperhuman” for the act of donation.<\/p>\n
