Jahanara Alam, a pacer for the Bangladesh women\u2019s cricket team who is currently out of favour, has accused captain Nigar Sultana Joty of physically assaulting junior players. However, these allegations have been dismissed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) as \u201cbaseless and unfortunate.”<\/p>\n

In an interview with the Bangladesh daily \u2018Kaler Kantho\u2019, Alam made a series of serious accusations against the current captain, some teammates, the coaching staff, and team management. These allegations followed the team\u2019s seventh-place finish at the recent Women\u2019s ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is nothing new. Joty beats up the juniors a lot,” Alam stated in the interview. \u201cEven during this World Cup, the juniors told me, \u2018No, I won\u2019t do this again. Then I\u2019ll have to get slapped again.\u2019 I heard from some people, \u2018I got beaten up yesterday.\u2019 Even during the Dubai tour, she called a junior into the room and slapped her.”<\/p>\n

Alam, who took a two-month break earlier this year following a mental health breakdown during the 2024 T20 World Cup in the UAE, last played for Bangladesh against Ireland in December of the previous year. The 32-year-old, who has taken 48 wickets in 52 ODIs and 60 wickets in 83 T20Is for Bangladesh, claimed that the team\u2019s environment had turned toxic over the years, compelling her to step away to protect her mental health.<\/p>\n

\u201cActually, I am not alone, everyone in the Bangladesh team is more or less a victim. Everyone\u2019s suffering is different. Here, one or two people get advanced facilities and in some cases, only one person gets them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 2021, the process of eliminating seniors like me along with a few others from the post-Covid camp began. Then I was made the captain of one of the three teams in the Bangladesh Games.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe captains of the other two teams were Jyoti (Nigar Sultana) and Sharmin Sultana. The pressure on seniors started from then on.”<\/p>\n

BCB\u2019s Response<\/h2>\n

The BCB quickly responded by dismissing the allegations. \u201cThe BCB categorically and strongly refutes these allegations, which are baseless, fabricated and devoid of any truth. The Board finds it unfortunate that such derogatory and scandalous claims have been made at a time when the Bangladesh Women\u2019s Team is showing commendable progress and unity on the international stage.”<\/p>\n

The board further described the remarks as \u201cdeliberate and ill-intentioned”.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is deeply disappointing that an individual who currently has no involvement or relevance in the plans of Bangladesh cricket has chosen to make such misleading statements in public,” the BCB said.<\/p>\n

Backing its current players and management, the BCB said it has \u201ccomplete trust and confidence in the women\u2019s national team\u2019s leadership, players and management” and has \u201cfound no evidence to support any of the claims made.”<\/p>\n

Joty has not yet responded to the charges.<\/p>\n
