Veteran Hong Kong actor and filmmaker Stanley Fung Shui-fan, best known for his comic flair and beloved roles in Hong Kong cinema, has passed away at the age of 80. His death came just a week after he appeared to predict his own passing while mourning his late friend and fellow actor Hui Shiu-hung, affectionately known as \u201cBenz Hung,” who died earlier in the week from cancer-related complications.<\/p>\n

In a heartfelt post after Hui\u2019s death, Fung had written, \u201cWe must part ways eventually, but I\u2019m older than you and terminally ill, barely clinging to life.” His words, once seen as an expression of grief, have now taken on a haunting poignancy.<\/p>\n

News of Fung\u2019s passing was confirmed by New Taipei City councillor Tsai Shu-chun, who shared the update on social media. \u201cI heard the news two hours ago and my heart sank,” she wrote. \u201cHe was always such a fascinating person. His words were captivating and his smiles told stories. He was genuine and endearing both on and off camera.” She added, \u201cMay you continue to tell stories and capture life on another stage still with that smile.”<\/p>\n

Tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry. Former TVB executive Tsang Sing-ming expressed his sorrow, writing, \u201cDeepest condolences to my dear friend. May you rest in peace! We will always remember you!”<\/p>\n

Born in Guangdong, China, in 1944, Fung moved to Hong Kong at the age of six and began his film career in 1967 with To Rose with Love, directed by Chor Yuen. He made his directorial debut in 1974 with The Looks of Hong Kong, later becoming a defining figure in Hong Kong\u2019s comedy scene. Fung appeared in over 135 films, including the iconic Lucky Stars series, where he played \u201cRawhide” alongside Sammo Hung, Charlie Chin, Eric Tsang, Richard Ng, and Michael Miu.<\/p>\n

Fung relocated to Taiwan in 1989 and obtained citizenship in 1996. A longtime supporter of the Kuomintang, he often voiced support for cross-strait reunification under a democratic framework.<\/p>\n

The actor\u2019s death adds to a year of significant losses for Hong Kong cinema, following the passing of veteran stars Lai Suen, Chow Chung, and Suet Nei.<\/p>\n
