Before her hit appearance on Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives, Shalini Passi says she struggled with confidence and even took English lessons for years to \u201csound cool.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n

Shalini Passi, who captured hearts with her grace and sincerity in Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives, has become one of reality TV\u2019s most unexpected style icons. Amid a world of curated glamour, she stood out \u2014 not for drama, but for dignity. Her effortless charm, old-world poise, and disarming honesty made her an instant favourite among audiences who were drawn to her refreshing authenticity.<\/p>\n

But behind the elegant confidence and luminous presence, Shalini reveals there once lived a woman wrestling with deep insecurities \u2014 a woman who almost went under the knife in search of self-acceptance.<\/p>\n

In a candid conversation with Humans of Bombay, the art collector and philanthropist opened up about her journey from self-doubt to self-love, recounting how she once struggled to feel \u201ccool enough” for the camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cI Wanted to Be Cool, Not From the Victorian Era”<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore signing the series and starting the shoot, I went through a phase where I wanted to be \u2018cool,\u2019” she shared. \u201cI was very conscious and told myself, \u2018Now that I\u2019m going to face the camera, I can\u2019t look like I\u2019m from the Victorian era.\u2019 Honestly, I even tried learning slang and speaking in a cool manner like everyone else.”<\/p>\n

Shalini revealed she had been taking English lessons for nearly eight years. \u201cI used to stammer and had trouble pronouncing tough words, so I thought it was high time I became \u2018cool\u2019 \u2014 but I just couldn\u2019t,” she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

Her friends weren\u2019t convinced she\u2019d fit into the show\u2019s glitzy, dramatic universe either. \u201cWhen I signed the series, many of my friends called me and said, \u2018Don\u2019t do it, Shalini. You\u2019re too simple, you\u2019re not cut out for it.\u2019 But now, they\u2019ve all changed their minds,” she smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI Avoided Smiling Because I Thought My Nose Looked Big”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even as she appeared calm and composed on screen, Shalini confessed that she was battling insecurities about her looks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t smile too much because I feel my nose is too big,” she admitted. \u201cNow, of course, I contour it. But for most of my life, I avoided smiling because I thought it made my nose look even bigger. For the longest time, I also believed my teeth looked too yellow because of my fair complexion. But now, I think it actually looks fine on camera.”<\/p>\n

\u201cMy Nose Defines My Character”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The turning point in her self-image came two decades ago, during a visit to a plastic surgeon in New York. Shalini recalled how a single conversation changed everything.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe looked at me and said, \u2018I know why you\u2019re here,\u2019” she said. \u201cI asked him, \u2018Why?\u2019 and he said, \u2018Because of your nose.\u2019 I told him he was right. Then he said, \u2018Do you know your nose is probably your grandfather\u2019s or your mother\u2019s?\u2019 I told him it was my grandfather\u2019s. He said, \u2018Your nose defines your character. I can fix it, but it will change your face \u2014 and then it won\u2019t be your face.\u2019”<\/p>\n

That one statement, she says, made her walk out of the clinic for good. \u201cEver since that day, I dropped the idea. Now, I proudly carry everything I have inherited from my family,” she concluded.<\/p>\n

Today, Shalini Passi is admired not just for her style and sophistication, but for something far rarer \u2014 the courage to embrace imperfection in a world obsessed with filters and facades.<\/p>\n
