(Representative/Shutterstock)

The increasing prevalence of kidney stones, particularly among young people, is a growing concern. Kidney stones, when small, can sometimes pass out naturally through urine, with doctors advocating for ample water intake to facilitate this process.

There is a common belief that drinking beer can help flush out kidney stones, often adopted as a home remedy, but does this hold any truth? Dr. Amrendra Pathak, Vice Chairman of the Urology Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, clarified the matter for News18.

Dr. Pathak explained that kidney stones form when minerals like calcium, oxalate, and uric acid accumulate in the kidney and create small crystals. These crystals can grow larger and obstruct the urinary tract, leading to symptoms such as burning, pain, or blood in the urine.

While small stones may pass out through urine, larger stones often require surgical removal. Drinking plenty of water is recommended to help flush out kidney stones, as it thins the urine, facilitating the passage of stones.

Typically, kidney stones of 5mm or smaller can pass through urine, although even small stones can sometimes get stuck and necessitate surgical intervention.

Regarding beer, Dr. Pathak points out that it does not contain any properties that aid in flushing out kidney stones. Beer acts as a diuretic, increasing urine production, but this does not guarantee that the kidney stone will pass out. Similar effects can be achieved by drinking lemon water or plain water, he said.

Patients with kidney stones are advised against consuming beer. Dr. Pathak highlighted that beer contains alcohol, which can harm the body and lead to addiction.

Increased urine production from beer consumption can cause the stone to accumulate in the kidney, causing swelling. Therefore, drinking beer is not recommended for those with kidney stones. Additionally, beer can elevate uric acid levels and contribute to liver problems, potentially exacerbating the condition, he added.

First Published:

October 28, 2025, 15:03 IST

Disclaimer: Comments reflect users’ views, not News18’s.
