An RBI member post questioning the research ethics and alleging plagiarism has triggered a debate online in India\u2019s economic and financial community. It happened after Sarthak Gulati, an officer at the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and alumnus of Columbia University, alleged that State Bank of India\u2019s (SBI) Ecowrap reports have replicated sections of RBI\u2019s Monetary Policy Reports (MPRs) without attribution.<\/p>\n

Gulati Raises Plagiarism Concerns<\/h3>\n

In a LinkedIn post, Gulati said that SBI\u2019s July 2025 Ecowrap \u201creplicates large parts of Chapter 2: Price and Cost from the RBI\u2019s April 2025 MPR \u2014 paragraph-by-paragraph, including key charts and narratives.” He added that the October 2025 Ecowrap also \u201cmirrors language and structure from the RBI\u2019s October 2025 MPR.”<\/p>\n

Gulati, who described the issue as \u201cdeeply concerning,” cited cases where even boxed research items from RBI\u2019s MPR \u2014 often containing original analysis \u2014 appeared in Ecowrap without credit, including one on spatial price convergence. He said such practices \u201cundermine the value of original institutional research” and violate research ethics, stressing that \u201creaders deserve clarity on where the ideas they\u2019re reading actually come from.”<\/p>\n

SBI Economist Responds<\/h3>\n

Responding on LinkedIn, Dr. Tapas Parida, Economist at SBI\u2019s Corporate Centre, called the accusations \u201cselect social media rants” that overlook the \u201ccircular nature of research.” He argued that overlapping findings are common because multiple institutions often use similar data and concepts, adding that SBI\u2019s analysis used a shorter, updated dataset to study \u03b2-convergence and had \u201ca distinct methodology.”<\/p>\n

Parida said, \u201cWhile the Central Bank\u2019s research on spatial convergence is undoubtedly more exhaustive, our work focused on more recent data to understand the inflation trend.” He maintained that SBI duly acknowledged the RBI in its tables and reaffirmed the bank\u2019s commitment to research integrity.<\/p>\n

Quoting Rumi, Parida concluded, \u201cRaise your words, not voice. It is the rain that grows flowers, not thunder,” stressing that SBI Research \u201cstands for teamwork and fair debate, not self-promotion.”<\/p>\n
