In a major development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to ask Test captain, Shan Masood, to be the new director of international cricket operations, and for the time being, he will also continue to lead the team in the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.<\/p>\n

A PCB source said on Friday that after discussions within the board there was a clear consensus that Shan is the best man to lead the international cricket affairs department.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, this post was advertised by the board recently, and its last date for applying is November 2, and the source said Shan is now the frontrunner.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the time being whenever he takes over as director, he will continue to play cricket, but apparently, he has also shown his interest in the position, as he meets all the criteria for the position and in the advertisement,” the source said.<\/p>\n

There was talk about former captain and head coach Misbah ul Haq being appointed to the post, but he has not shown interest due to his already busy commitments.<\/p>\n

The qualification for the key position as mentioned in the advertisement was that the individual should be a former domestic or international cricketer.<\/p>\n

It was reported on Wednesday that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has convinced Misbah to apply for the position as he wants the former skipper and head coach of the national side to handle international cricket affairs.<\/p>\n

Misbah is still closely associated with the PCB in his capacity as mentor and advisor to the chairman on cricket matters and is said to have played a big part in the removal of Mohammad Rizwan as captain of the ODI squad.<\/p>\n

Misbah also convinced the national selectors that top batter Babar Azam should not be considered for a recall in the national T20 side.<\/p>\n

Misbah, after his retirement in 2017, was appointed head coach and chief selector in 2019 by the PCB but after one year he resigned as chief selector.<\/p>\n

He was later removed as head coach prematurely when Ramiz Raja took over as PCB chairman in September, 2021.<\/p>\n

But since then the former Test batter has remained linked with the PCB with his last big appoinment being as mentor of a domestic team in 2024 at a salary of 5 million rupees per month.<\/p>\n
