Philadelphia, the nation\u2019s birthplace is gearing up for America\u2019s 250th anniversary in 2026 with year-long celebrations, world-class events, art festivals and museum exhibitions<\/h2>\n
\"Independence<\/p>\n

Independence Hall<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n

Philadelphia, known as America\u2019s birthplace, will be at the centre of celebrations in 2026 as the nation marks the semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, signed by Franklin, Jefferson, and other delegates at Independence Hall. Blending history, culture, and community spirit, the city will host spectacular events throughout 2026, with some festivities beginning as early as this year.<\/p>\n

Early Celebrations in 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n

Starting in 2025, Calder Gardens, which opened in September 2025 on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, brings new life to the work of Alexander Calder, the innovative sculptor who invented the mobile. Homecoming 250 will celebrate the 250th anniversaries of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps in the fall of 2025, kicking off a series of events leading to America\u2019s semiquincentennial.<\/p>\n

Held in Philadelphia, Camden, and along the Delaware River, the festivities will commemorate the Navy\u2019s and Marine Corps\u2019 founding in 1775. From October 9\u201316, 2025, visitors can enjoy free, family-friendly events including historical exhibits, ship tours, and a breathtaking Blue Angels flyover.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia will also honour the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army, officially established on June 14, 1775, by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia in response to growing conflict with British forces during the early stages of the American Revolutionary War.<\/p>\n

Celebrating 250 Years, Philly Style!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kicking off a full year of celebration, Philadelphia will spotlight its many historic \u201cfirsts” in 2026 through 52 Weeks of Firsts, a citywide series of weekly events, storytelling, and experiences. Some historic firsts include the Slinky, the nation\u2019s first Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the American flag.<\/p>\n

The city will also amplify and expand its already electrifying summer celebrations for the semiquincentennial. The annual Wawa Welcome America festival will return, hosting citywide programming from Juneteenth through the Fourth of July. Traditionally, the two-week festival concludes with a headlining concert on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, followed by fireworks.<\/p>\n

The Philadelphia Historic District, which hosted the Red, White & Blue To-Do on July 2, 2025, promises to grow each year into 2026, becoming a cherished tradition for visitors. Inspired by John Adams\u2019s call for \u201cpomp and parade,” the event invites visitors to America\u2019s most historic square mile for two days of festivities, including parades, concerts, and extended visiting hours at historic attractions.<\/p>\n

Moreover, America250PA is creating an art series titled Bells Across PA, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026. Selected artists will transform fibreglass bell sculptures in each of Pennsylvania\u2019s 67 counties, including Philadelphia. The exterior bells will be installed between April and December 2025 and will remain on display through the end of 2026.<\/p>\n

In collaboration with Visit Philadelphia, TED Democracy is bringing a global spotlight to discussions on democracy\u2019s future. The series features thought-provoking fireside chats, speakers, and celebrations in 2024 and 2025, building toward a flagship event in February 2026. The event will showcase bold ideas and solidify Philadelphia\u2019s role as a hub for democratic thought leadership.<\/p>\n

Launching in May 2026, ArtPhilly will present What Now, a citywide multidisciplinary arts festival showcasing Philadelphia artists and neighbourhoods while sparking civic dialogue on the nation\u2019s evolution since 1776. Through What Now, commissioned artists will interpret Philadelphia\u2019s legacy, reflecting on the city\u2019s complex history and its future.<\/p>\n

Exciting Sporting Events<\/strong><\/p>\n

Football fans got a taste of global action in the summer of 2025 when Lincoln Financial Field hosted FIFA Club World Cup 2025 games, with Philadelphia among 11 host cities.<\/p>\n

July 4, 2026, will be another landmark day for sports in Philadelphia. The city has been chosen as one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup 2026, hosting six matches at Lincoln Financial Field, including five group-stage matches and one Round of 16 match scheduled for Independence Day.<\/p>\n

Philadelphia will also host the 2026 MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in the summer of 2026. March Madness returns to the city as the Xfinity Mobile Arena hosts the NCAA Men\u2019s Basketball 1st and 2nd round games.<\/p>\n

Just beyond the city, the 2026 PGA Championship will be held at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square from May 11\u201317, while later that summer, Merion Golf Club in Ardmore will host the United States Amateur Championship from August 10\u201316 bringing together the nation\u2019s top men\u2019s amateur golfers for one of the sport\u2019s most prestigious competitions.<\/p>\n

New Philadelphia Museums and Exhibitions<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2026, Philadelphia will debut landmark art experiences celebrating American creativity and the city\u2019s storytelling legacy. Leading the way is A Nation of Artists, a joint exhibition from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and PAFA, featuring over 1,000 works of art. The exhibition will include rarely seen pieces from the Middleton Family Collection, highlighting diverse artists and overlooked voices in American history.<\/p>\n

Expanding the city\u2019s immersive art offerings, muralist Meg Saligman will debut Ministry of Awe inside a restored Old City bank, a six-story installation blending visual art, sound, and live performance, inviting visitors to explore \u201cawe” through interactive, evolving environments.<\/p>\n

New exhibitions will also open at Philadelphia\u2019s favourite museums in 2026. The Franklin Institute is developing a unique touring exhibition debuting that year, showcasing how Universal Parks are created. Designed, built, and toured entirely by the Franklin Institute, the exhibit will highlight milestones from the early Studio Tram Tour to the upcoming Epic Universe.<\/p>\n

The Please Touch Museum, located in Memorial Hall originally built for America\u2019s 1876 Centennial Exposition will debut a new exhibit titled Discovering Democracy, introducing children to the concept of democracy and its role in their everyday lives.<\/p>\n

The Philadelphia Zoo the nation\u2019s first zoo has announced its largest exhibition project in over a decade: a $20 million transformation of Bear Country, set to break ground in 2025 and debut in 2026. The expanded exhibit will feature the Zoo360 trail for bears, an off-exhibit space for cub rearing, and enhanced water features and landscaping.<\/p>\n

The Museum of the American Revolution will open The Declaration\u2019s Journey, an exhibition celebrating the Declaration of Independence\u2019s 250-year legacy and its global influence on independence movements. The exhibition opens in October 2025 and will run through early 2027.<\/p>\n
