Gemini, ChatGPT and Perplexity have a lot of work to do.<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n

AI assistants are everywhere and they are helping people with easy information. But a new study claims AI assistants like Gemini from Google or even ChatGPT from OpenAI are prone to making mistakes, even blunders. They are giving fake news to users which once again raises concerns about AI hallucinations. <\/span><\/p>\n

The research done by BBC and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) says most popular AI-powered chatbots are spreading misinformation and their sourcing mechanism has them worried about the content that people are getting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Fake News Problem With AI<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The study has been comprehensive with its tests, and claims to have analysed over 3,000 responses crafted by AI assistants like Gemini and ChatGPT. The test was done in 14 languages and across countries like France, Germany, and the US among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The results were quite worrying because many said the sourcing of news content by these AI assistants were misleading, missing and even wrongly attributed. Gemini from Google was seen as the biggest culprit in these issues with 72 percent of the total responses citing the assistant for making these mistakes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, Gemini gave false information around the change in laws with disposable vapes. ChatGPT said Pope Francis is the current Pope which is a staggering detail for someone who passed away earlier this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The AI News Future<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These data points are critical at a time when studies say 15 percent of consumers under 25 years are using AI assistants to read and be up-to-date with the latest news. Gemini and other AI chatbots do come with a disclaimer about them being prone to making mistakes, but the EBU is not having any of it and would prefer them to work on limiting or erasing these issues completely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Google is no stranger to AI issues and the company even had to face misinformation complaints with Gemini a few months back. The company is already planning for the Gemini 3.0 version this year and we hope these mistakes can be improved. <\/span><\/p>\n
