South Africa scored 312 for 9, with Laura Wolvaardt contributing 90 and half-centuries from Sune Luus (61) and Marizanne Kapp (68).

However, multiple rain interruptions led to a further revision, and Pakistan was set a DLS target of 234 in 20 overs. They managed only 83 for seven in response.

Pakistan never looked likely to chase down the target, and by the end of the 10th over, they were reduced to 35 for 4 when the rain returned.

Marizanne Kapp, having already scored a valuable 68, decimated Pakistan’s top order, taking three out of the four wickets to extinguish any hopes of a miraculous chase.

Once the rain stopped, South Africa secured the two points they fully deserved.

Earlier, Laura Wolvaardt provided an aggressive start, Kapp added stability in the middle order, and Nadine de Klerk delivered her usual late surge as South Africa posted an imposing total.

Wolvaardt struck 90 off 82 balls with 10 fours and two sixes, and added 118 runs in just over 15 overs for the second wicket with Sune Luus (61 off 59 balls), who also hit eight fours and two sixes.

After Luus’s dismissal, Kapp, who contributed 68, added 60 runs for the fourth wicket with Wolvaardt, showcasing strokes all around the park.

The typically steady skipper Fatima Sana conceded 69 runs in eight overs, with eight fours and three sixes hit off her bowling. Spinner Sadia Iqbal was hit for four sixes and seven fours, while veteran Diana Baig gave away 49 runs in her five overs.

Nadine de Klerk, a revelation as a finisher in the tournament, provided the final impetus with her 16-ball 41.

De Klerk hit three fours and four sixes, three of which were particularly notable. One off left-arm spinner Iqbal was hit over long-off, while Fatima was punished down the ground and over mid-wicket.

Kapp, on her part, smashed a half-tracker from Sadia Iqbal over the mid-wicket fence and also hit Fatima over square leg, turning the end of the innings into a run-fest for the Proteas women.

Brief Scores:

South Africa 312 for 9 in 40 overs (Laura Wolvaardt 90, Sune Luus 61, Marizanne Kapp 68 not out, Nadine de Klerk 41; Nashra Sandhu 3/45, Sadia Iqbal 3/63).

Pakistan 83 for 7 in 20 overs (Marizanne Kapp 3/20, Nondumiso Shangase 2/19).

(With inputs from Agencies)

Ritayan Basu

Ritayan Basu, Senior Sub-Editor, Sports at News18.com.
