It\u2019s called \u2018microshifting\u2019, and it\u2019s fast becoming the next big workplace trend.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Microshifting?<\/h2>\n<p id=\"2\" class=\"story_para_2\">In simple terms, microshifting means breaking your workday into short, focused bursts instead of sitting at your desk for eight straight hours. Think of answering emails in the morning, going for a gym session or school pickup in the afternoon, and finishing a presentation after dinner. A report by Owl Labs found that 63% of employees now work full-time from the office, while the share of hybrid workers visiting the office four times a week has risen to 34%, up from 23% last year. This \u201chybrid creep&#8221; shows companies tightening attendance even as employees push back, unwilling to let physical presence define performance.<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Game-Changing For Parents, Carers\u2019<\/h2>\n<p id=\"7\" class=\"story_para_7\">Microshifting allows people to work around their own energy peaks and personal commitments. \u201cMicroshifting is a great way for employees to balance their personal responsibilities alongside work,&#8221; said Peter Duris, cofounder and CEO of Kickresume, in an interview with Fast Company. \u201cThis may be especially game-changing for parents or carers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"8\" class=\"story_para_8\">Owl Labs\u2019 2025 State of Hybrid Work report shows that 65% of workers are intrigued by this idea, which it defines as \u201cstructured flexibility with short, non-linear work blocks matched to your energy, duties or productivity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9\" class=\"story_para_9\">The appeal isn\u2019t hard to see. For caregivers, especially parents, the traditional schedule can be punishing. Around 62% of parents say the 9-to-5 workday makes life harder, while 68% believe their caregiving duties affect their work performance. For them, microshifting offers the freedom to manage school runs, meals, or medical appointments without guilt.<\/p>\n<h2>Flexibility Vs Salary<\/h2>\n<p id=\"11\" class=\"story_para_11\">Interestingly, employees now increasingly place as much value on flexibility as they do on money. The research shows that most workers are willing to trade a portion of their pay for more adaptable schedules \u2014 about 9% would give up part of their salary for flexible hours, while 8% would do so for a four-day workweek.<\/p>\n<p id=\"12\" class=\"story_para_12\">This shift is partly driven by two realities:<\/p>\n<p id=\"13\" class=\"story_para_13\">The caregiving crunch: With nuclear families on the rise, many parents have no backup at home. The 9-to-5 format often clashes with family needs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"14\" class=\"story_para_14\">Poly-employment: A growing number of workers now maintain side gigs or small businesses. According to reports, one in five employees has multiple sources of income, and microshifting helps them balance it all.<\/p>\n<h2>Productivity Over Presence<\/h2>\n<p id=\"16\" class=\"story_para_16\">\u201cMicroshifting is a great way for employees to balance their personal responsibilities alongside work,&#8221; Kickresume cofounder and CEO Peter Duris told Fast Company, according to firstpost.com. \u201cIf you have the option to work microshifts, it could be worth discussing with your manager. This may be especially game-changing for parents or carers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"17\" class=\"story_para_17\">Managers once believed that \u201cif you can\u2019t see it, it\u2019s not getting done&#8221;. But, that assumption is losing ground. Nearly 69% of managers now say hybrid or remote setups have improved productivity. Yet, some companies continue investing in monitoring tools \u2014 something that 47% of employees view as intrusive.<\/p>\n<p id=\"18\" class=\"story_para_18\">Experts argue that working in shorter bursts enhances focus and prevents burnout. \u201cWorkplaces aren\u2019t as rigid and structured as they once were,&#8221; Duris noted. \u201cFlexibility is one of the most common and sought-after perks in a job, whether that\u2019s having the option to work from home or working flexible hours.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"19\" class=\"story_para_19\">He also offered advice to managers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"20\" class=\"story_para_20\">\u201cWhen employees work outside of typical hours, it\u2019s important to schedule core working hours for the whole team,&#8221; Duris said. \u201cMake sure to check in with your team regularly to see how they\u2019re managing their workload and personal responsibilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"21\" class=\"story_para_21\">However, studies show that those using microshifting end up having to work more hours per day.
