One of the highlights at the New York Comic Con on October 11 was certainly the announcement at the Mortal Kombat II<\/a> talks about the next sequel in the franchise. Jeremy Slater, the co-writer of the film, came forward and told the audience that the writing of the third instalment had already been handed to him. He worked on the screenplay with Ed Boon and John Tobias.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this movie. They are so excited. They are so convinced there is a giant fanbase waiting for it that they already hired me to start writing the next installment,” Slater told the audience.<\/p>\n

He also encouraged the crowd to bring their energy and enthusiasm when the sequel hits the cinema in May 2026. \u201cTherefore, when the second film is released, let them know that there is a huge audience waiting for this film because if that is the case, we want to keep making them for you,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Return of the Cast and Characters<\/strong><\/p>\n

Slater was joined at the panel by actors Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, Tati Gabrielle, and Martyn Ford, as well as director Simon McQuoid. The moderator for the session was Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat video game series.<\/p>\n

In Mortal Kombat II, Karl Urban\u2019s Johnny Cage will be the one to fight to bring back Shao Kahn, who is a Martyn Ford character, and save Earthrealm. Aside from that, the sequel also pledges that Tadanobu Asano will be back as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero. On the other hand, some of the new cast members include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana and Tati Gabrielle as Jade.<\/p>\n

Director Talks Delays and Excitement<\/strong><\/p>\n

The subsequent installment in the series was scheduled for October 2025 but has been delayed until May 2026. McQuoid, the director, commented on the matter, \u201cEvery time people have seen this movie, it sort of gained momentum. And we\u2019ve created a massive summer blockbuster. I think we should all be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat II and the franchise itself is going to kick off summer next year,” McQuoid said. \u201cSo yes, we have to wait, but it\u2019s going to feel massive when it comes out next year. That\u2019s the reason.”<\/p>\n

Johnny Cage\u2019s Character Evolution<\/strong><\/p>\n

Urban shared his views on how his character changed in the follow-up film. \u201cThe first time we see him in Mortal Kombat II, he is a very dispirited character. His career has gone down the drain. He hasn\u2019t been following his martial arts training,” Urban elaborated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole world has forgotten Johnny Cage. He is just a broken man. Throughout the movie, you will see his transition to a true hero of Earthrealm. A savior. You get to see him sort of reluctantly being thrown into this insane action epic adventure,” he went on explaining.<\/p>\n

The characters that fans of the franchise are very excited about the release. The film is set to release in cinemas on May 2, 2026.<\/p>\n
