Indian Air Force Day: History and Significance<\/h2>\n

Launched as an auxiliary force under British rule on October 8, 1932, the Indian Air Force was originally named the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF). The RIAF\u2019s maiden operational flight took off on April 1, 1933, carrying six RAF-trained officers and 19 Havai Sepoys.<\/p>\n

The RIAF made significant contributions during World War II and earned its \u2018Royal\u2019 prefix in 1945 for its service. When India gained independence on August 15, 1947, after 200 years of British colonial rule, and became a republic in 1950, the prefix was officially removed, and the force was formally established as the Indian Air Force.<\/p>\n

The IAF has a proud history of playing a major role in some of India\u2019s most critical conflicts. These include the Indo-Pak wars of 1947, 1965, 1971 and 1999, as well as the 1962 Sino-Indian War. The force also took part in significant operations such as Operation Poomalai in 1987 and Operation Safed Sagar during the Kargil war in 1999.<\/p>\n
