Kane Williamson, who led New Zealand to victory in the inaugural World Test Championship title during the 2019-21 cycle, emphasised the importance of preserving the traditional format of the game. He stated that Test cricket must extend beyond the Big Three\u2013 India, Australia, and England \u2014 competing against each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf only three teams are playing the format, it will struggle to survive. While we enjoy watching those series, they don\u2019t fully support Test cricket\u2019s growth,” Williamson was quoted as saying at the CEAT Cricket Awards in Mumbai on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a major challenge, with numerous conversations ongoing to find solutions if sustaining the format is the goal. Meanwhile, the game is under strain in many countries.”<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of discussion about the Test game and how to keep breathing life into it, especially in countries where it\u2019s facing greater challenges,” he added.<\/p>\n

Williamson highlighted the ongoing discussions about how to revitalise Test cricket, particularly in countries where it faces significant challenges.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged that regardless of discussions on a potential two-tier Test cricket system, it is imperative for all playing nations to collaborate and find a solution.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe concern with a potential two-tier system is how teams in the second tier can continue to improve and work their way up to the top division,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Test format needs greater importance placed on it by all playing nations, along with additional resources to support its growth. As a passionate supporter of Test cricket, I would love to see it thrive,” he said.<\/p>\n

Why A Casual Contract?<\/h2>\n

The former New Zealand skipper explained that changes in his life circumstances have led to him having a \u201ccasual contract” with New Zealand Cricket.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy life situation, like everyone\u2019s, changes over time. With a young family, my decisions aren\u2019t solely about cricket \u2014 they involve much broader considerations. These decisions are made in close consultation with New Zealand Cricket. It\u2019s not about having a fixed long-term plan but working together and addressing challenges as they arise,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLife is like that \u2014 you make decisions based on your priorities, and others also make choices that can impact your career. These situations will always arise, and being part of those conversations, even if sometimes frustrating, shows you\u2019ve been involved in the game for a significant time, which is a privilege,” he added.<\/p>\n
