The revised FASTag rules will encourage the adoption of digital payments, enhance transparency in toll operations, and improve the overall user experience on National Highways.<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n

In a move to encourage digital transactions and curb cash payments at toll plazas, the government has announced new rules under which vehicles without a valid FASTag will be charged 1.25 times the regular toll if the payment is made through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). However, those opting to pay in cash will continue to pay double the regular toll fee.<\/p>\n

The National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) (Third Amendment) Rules, 2025, will come into effect from November 15, 2025, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said in a notification on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnder the new rule, vehicles entering a fee plaza without a valid, functional FASTag will be charged twice the applicable user fee, if the fee payment is made in cash. Such users who opt to pay the fee via the Unified Payment Interface (UPI), will be charged only 1.25 times the applicable user fee for that category of the vehicle,” according to the MoRTH statement.<\/p>\n

According to the amended rule, vehicles entering a user fee plaza without a valid, functional FASTag will be charged twice the applicable fee if payment is made in cash. If the user opts to pay via UPI, the charge will be reduced to 1.25 times the regular toll.<\/p>\n

For example, if the normal toll for a particular category of vehicle is Rs 100 through FASTag, the user would now pay Rs 125 via UPI or Rs 200 in cash, the ministry clarified.<\/p>\n

The change, it said, is designed to promote digital payments, enhance transparency, and streamline toll collection on national highways.<\/p>\n

Promoting Cashless Highways<\/strong><\/p>\n

The ministry said the latest amendment reflects the government\u2019s broader effort to leverage technology for more efficient toll management and to reduce congestion at fee plazas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe amendment aims to strengthen the fee collection process, enhance transparency in toll collection, and promote ease of commuting for national highway users,” the statement added.<\/p>\n
