Gill’s 50-run knock at Narendra Modi Stadium helped him join Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar and Sourav Ganguly in an elite list. The 26-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab became the fourth Indian on Friday (October 3) to cross the 50-run mark in his first home as well as away Test as captain.

Gill made his Test captaincy debut against England in Leeds on June 20, 2025, and scored 147 runs in the first innings. In the first innings of his first home Test as captain, he scored 50 runs.

Vijay Hazare was the first Indian captain to cross the 50-run mark in both his first home and away Test. He made 164* against England in Delhi (December 1951) and 89 against England in Leeds (June 1952).

Gavaskar, on the other hand, scored 116 runs in his first away Test (against New Zealand in Auckland, January 1976) and 205 runs in his first home Test (against the West Indies in Mumbai, December 1978).

Ganguly made his Test captaincy debut against Bangladesh in Dhaka on November 10, 2000, and scored 84 runs. In his first home Test as captain, Ganguly remained unbeaten on 65 against Zimbabwe in Delhi (November 2000).

Indians to score 50+ score in 1st home and away Test as captain

PLAYER

RUNS

OPPOSITION

VENUE

YEAR

Vijay Hazare

164*, DNB

England

Delhi

1951

Vijay Hazare

89, 56

England

Leeds

1952

Sunil Gavaskar

116, 35*

New Zealand

Auckland

1976

Sunil Gavaskar

205, 73

West Indies

Mumbai (WS)

1978

Sourav Ganguly

84, DNB

Bangladesh

Dhaka

2000

Sourav Ganguly

27, 65*

Zimbabwe

Delhi

2000

Shubman Gill

147, 8

England

Leeds

2025

Shubman Gill

50

West Indies

Ahmedabad

2025

During his stay at the crease for Team India in the first innings of the Ahmedabad Test, Gill hammered five fours.
