At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, the Indian team put up a great show of unity and jubilation, yet was noticeably empty-handed as the usual gleam of the Asia Cup trophy was missing from their celebrations. After defeating Pakistan to clinch the Asia Cup 2025, the Indian team refused to accept the winner\u2019s trophy<\/a> from Mohsin Naqvi, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief as well interior minister, making a not-so silent political statement.<\/p>\n

The scene post-victory was unprecedented. Instead of the customary trophy lift, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav and his teammates celebrated their victory minus the silverware. Not only did the captain and his mates lift an imaginary trophy, Yadav even mimicked Rohit Sharma\u2019s iconic trophy pose, but without the coveted prize in hand.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the press after the final, Yadav said: \u201cWe as a team decided not to take the trophy (from Mohsin Naqvi). Nobody told us to do so. But I feel a team that that wins the tournament deserves the trophy.”<\/p>\n

Snubbed by India, Naqvi stormed out<\/a> of the Dubai International Cricket Stadium with the trophy and medals meant for the Indian players, triggering a major row. Videos on social media showed Naqvi carrying the trophy and medals and leaving the venue with ACC officials.<\/p>\n

The Indian side\u2019s boycott came amid Naqvi\u2019s continued aggression, including posting cryptic videos related to Cristiano Ronaldo\u2019s plane crash celebration, referencing Pakistani claims that six Indian jets were downed during Operation Sindoor following the Pahalgam terror attack\u2014a charge that India strongly denies. Naqvi also pushed for ICC to charge Suryakumar with a Level 4 offence for supporting the Indian Army and showing solidarity with Pahalgam terror attack victims. The Indian team maintained a \u2018no handshake\u2019 policy with Pakistan throughout the tournament.<\/p>\n

It was understood that the Indian team was willing to accept the trophy from any other dignitary on the podium except Naqvi.<\/p>\n

The politics of the post-match optics, however, could not dull the celebration of the Indian side as Hardik Pandya<\/a>, who sat out the final, added a photoshopped trophy to his post on social media, bringing back his T20 World Cup 2024 celebration. Vice-captain Shubman Gill too took a jibe by placing a virtual trophy between him and close friend and opening partner Abhishek Sharma in a photograph.<\/p>\n

Sources said Team India\u2019s refusal to accept the 2025 Asia Cup trophy stood as a clear rejection of Pakistan\u2019s ongoing disinformation and propaganda campaigns that Naqvi has come to embody. By declining to accept the trophy from Naqvi, India sent a two-fold message. First, it signals that New Delhi will not allow sports to be used as a tool for political propaganda or to whitewash contentious narratives. Second, it highlights India\u2019s resolve to separate substance from optics, refusing to normalise diplomatic and security concerns through symbolic gestures that could otherwise be exploited.<\/p>\n

A humiliated Naqvi, meanwhile, made a bizarre claim that India disgraced the spirit of the game by \u201cdragging war into it”. Reposting Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s tweet congratulating India after the win, the PCB chief wrote: \u201cIf war was your measure of pride, history already records your humiliating defeats at Pakistan\u2019s hands.”<\/p>\n

\u201cNo cricket match can rewrite that truth. Dragging war into sport only exposes desperation and disgraces the very spirit of the game,” Naqvi wrote.<\/p>\n

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has said that the decision to not receive the Asia Cup Trophy wasn\u2019t impulsive and they won\u2019t accept the silverware from a representative of a nation that is waging war against India.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me make this very clear \u2014 the Indian team\u2019s decision was deliberate. We had already communicated that we would not accept the Asia Cup trophy from Mr. Mohsin Naqvi, because he is not just the ACC chairman but also a senior leader from Pakistan. For us, it is not possible to take an award from someone who represents a country that is openly hostile and waging war against India,” Saikia told\u00a0CNN-News18<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe players were ready to receive the trophy, but only if it was presented by a neutral ACC or match official. When the insistence came that the presentation would be done by Mr. Naqvi himself, the team decided to stay away. That was not an impulsive act \u2014 it was a conscious and unanimous decision,” he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, after the presentation, the gentleman walked away with the trophy and even the medals meant for our players. That is completely against sporting spirit and against ACC protocol. We hope good sense will prevail, and that the trophy and medals will be handed over to us in due course,” he said.<\/p>\n
